I got passed over for a promotion to manager at a company I've been with for 9 years. They claim it's because I don't have enough sales experience, yet the 2 people they promoted to the role were doing the same thing as me beforehand. In fact, 1 of the people was just given the role and didn't have to go through the 5 interviews the rest of us had to endure. I'm debating whether I should stick around and see if some other manager role opens up or plan my way out of there.

That's frustrating. I feel like that person has a wider connection that's why he got promoted. You should start looking for other opportunities. Looks like your current employer doesn't really care about loyalty. Best of luck :)

Get out. I stayed for 12 years and I regret about half of it. Leaving was the best decision.

Also btw, interviewing for a promotion...if they gave it to someone else who didn't even interview....they probably just liked that person from the beginning and everything else was a dog and pony show of fairness. You weren't ever in the running.

like

That's why I'd never stay at a company for 9 years. They're not gonna take care of you if they already feel like they own you. Keep your ear to the market always

likefunny

Yes, 💯 leave that company. Have you gotten any promotions in 9 years?

like

6 promotions in 9 years is actually pretty good. To me, that means they value the work you’re doing.

If they went with someone else, keep in mind that they can often only promote one person at a time to a manager type role. Maybe a new one will come up later.

If you feel like you just missed out on a thing you wanted, that doesn’t feel like enough reason to leave.

If you feel like you’ve hit a WALL though and can’t break through - it might be time to say goodbye.

Best promotion is leaving for a better job…

Also one more thing, a former team lead of always said to me as well as myself learning the hard way is

“Until you reach the career goal then always move”

Always look out for the following:
1. Is there career progression
2. Is there a pay rise
3. Is there a bonus ( if applicable)

After about 18 months in to a job you will get a feel for how the company is treating you and where your career is going.

If you have no pay rise, no bonus but a chance career progression, might as well hold your tongue and bear with it for another year or so.

If you don’t get any of those three then it’s a sign to move.

Similar thing happened to me in a previous workplace, I ended up leaving and go better compensation with the next company as well as chance to progress.

It’s definitely time to leave. Leaving a great company is no easy feat especially if you like it there. But if you crave more and don’t have the support or they don’t see your value, time to go somewhere they will value you.

like

You should have left long time ago. Why did you wait for 9 years? Your resignation I guess is long overdue. You shouldn't have wasted your talent with a company that is run by politics in every level.

like

In the similar boat but in ITG.
Too much politics in the company. Planning to leave.

Leave! Run fast, run far. 9 years is too long for salespeople IMO. I stayed at a company for 7 years in engineering, and almost the same nonsense was pulled. Not worth it.

like

You did 5 interviews with 9 years tenure. This is such a disrespect to your time put in to be honest. Forget the sales experience. You've earned them enough to give you the role and pay for the training to catch you up.

like

I just went thru this didnt even have the opportunity to be interviewed or apply. After 7 years I will hand in my resignation tomorrow.

like

It’s not your experience. It’s either they don’t think your ready to be a leader, or it’s your brand, or your not a good fit for that team.

likehelpful

Sounds a lot like you never had it in the first place, not by your error though.

I’d suggest a sit down with them and be honest about your perspective on the situation. Give them an opportunity to be honest with you back, and if you feel like they’re not, the you’ve got an answer.

like

Office politics is my only feedback. Unless they are giving you some really nice perks it is literally costing you money to stay at your current org this long.
