You don’t ever have to say what you make now. Many states have made it illegal for them to ask this question. Just ask them for guidance on their range. Most of the time they will tell you the exact range. Then you can tell them how much you want from there.

like

Ask what their range is currently, for that role. If they give a range, go with the highest number in that range assuming they have said less than what they actually pay. If they do not give a range, give your expectations based on info from Glassdoor, levels.fyi - And also keep an eye on the RSUs. I recently negotiated for a tech firm, not faang and followed the same steps listed here

likehelpful

Great, this us helpful. Thanks!

When I interviewed they 100% knew how much I made (because consulting comp is standardized and they know that) but it didn’t matter because I had other offers for market value. So I said a number that was >2X current comp and that wasn’t a problem

Are you my D doppelganger? I'm a M3 making 137 🙃. Let's be friends.

like

You’re not obligated to tell them. Instead give them a range of your expectations

like

Agreed, but i also dont want to throw out a range, cos what if they were willing to pay me more than that range in the first place?

You do your research and then give out the high end of what your research found

like

Do research on what the role pays, make the bottom of your range the high end of what you find in research, assuming that number would get you to accept. Then also say, as you go through the interview process and learn more about the role, you will be able to have a more specific target after interviews. This leaves room for you to still negotiate, even if the initial offer is at your target number. I would also focus on TC numbers for now and not try to break out base/RSUs. Never share what you make currently. They will never ask, so never volunteer this information

Fair point.

I’m currently making 83K at AFS. 2.5 YOE. I’m interviewing with Deloitte GPS for a consultant level position and the recruiter mentioned 80K-90K for base salary. I don’t hate my role at AFS, I just want to leave to get more experience and money. I don’t think it makes sense to leave for anything less than 97K. Should I follow through with the interview for this role? Is there a chance Deloitte GPS would offer 97K-100K for the consultant level? This is for a Human Capital Consultant role btw

Our parents’ generation had them. Knowing there’s going to be money there when we can’t sling ads anymore could relieve so much stress now.
