I graduated with a 2.6 GPA in a major that I hated, I’m now working Strategy projects. Anyone else think the conventional educational system is a bust?

Graduated from a state school with a 2.7. Yeah I would 100% agree that the college system is absolutely broken. If I can be in and out of school in 2 years with a direct major I don’t understand why gen-Ed’s are required.

I also think it goes beyond just the school system though in that it’s a cultural thing. Albeit changing, you go from needing to ask to pee in HS geometry to picking a major to define at least the first 5-7 years of your post education life. There’s no room or tolerance to explore things you’re interested in, and in all honesty I think the school system is awful at fostering creativity and opening doors for people.

I disagree, you should already have a proficiency in everything you mentioned by the time you hit college. I’m not at college to pay thousands of dollars for a course that doesn’t pertain to my skillset I’m trying to hone in. If you can find a way to make each one relative to the major then sure, for example psychology of decision making could be applicable to business; history of massive rises and failures of companies/industries and dissecting that could be pertinent. But I don’t need another class on 14th century Egypt, or WW2 history. I spent all of my HS/JR high/elementary school with that being drilled in to me.

College is the time to specialize and I think colleges need to offer the opportunity to approach it like a trade school. If I’m an engineer, fast track me to being one. Don’t waste my time with music theory or theatre.

I do see your point despite disagreeing. I think to the first point I made, there’s a void/gap in pre college education where they aren’t teaching you the right things, and that’s why you see a fundamental disconnect about things like economics.

2.4 (weighted) GPA in HS in the house!

I make sure the kids get good grades, but school was absolutely broken for me. Seemed designed to reward avg intelligence and a high willingness to do meaningless work rather than ability to think / create on one’s own. Seems like a reasonable prep for much of the working world, at the cost of filtering out some really talented people with really good ideas.

I “thrived” (almost a 3.0) at a liberal arts school where there was a much higher premium on actual thinking.

The educational system in my humble opinion is in meed of a 21st century refresh. Musk and others realize that…..

How about.. Consulting strategy is bust 🧐🧐

All a high gpa proves is that you’re good at following the rules. Maybe you think outside the box a lot and that’s why you’re in strategy?

Not exactly. For a tough major like math, CS or ee/chemical engineering, its not just laziness or following rules- the material is difficult to master. If you’re talking about a business or econ major , then yes

Nope, I don't think the conventional education system is a bust.
Maybe you're an outlier and despite your low GPA you're doing well in career. But for majority of the people, a good degree, GPA, college name etc matter (at least for 2-3 years after graduation)

You mean going hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt for a sociology degree and making 40k after the fact is a farce?!? You don’t say

I failed out of college the first time and got an online only degree at 30yo before getting an MBA.

Did 3 years at a T2 doing mostly strategy work and exited at manager level for FAANG strategy role.

Education is pretty valuable (I use my MBA education daily), but GPA is a better predictor of effort than ability.

Perhaps I should have said capability? I don't think these words are consistently defined, but I was referring to potential to get something done. Plenty of very smart, capable people that have great impact in their careers didn't get good grades.

U just finessed the system. Be proud homie.

There’s no perfect fix. I think on average it works. I’m not too sure what you’re trying to correlate between a 2.6 GPA and Strategy projects?

Maybe you had a low gpa because you chose a major that you hated?

So you picked the wrong major, didn’t perform well in school and didn’t switch major, and now you’re blaming the system 🤧

2.6 GPA from a State School.
Senior Manager in Tech Strategy, on the cusp of MD.

I really just didn’t give a crap about school other than getting a passing grade, also- my test taking skills were garbage, until senior year. It hasn’t mattered in the end.

Came in as an experienced hire, they didn’t ask.

2.7 here. “High performer” up for early promo. School sucked, work is easy

If you're starting from the premise that college should be about preparing you for the workforce, then it's no doubt a major failure. But I don't think the goal of college should be to enable students to get a high salaried job.

Crazy ask: are you from an upper-class background? Did you have an “in” at Deloitte? My take is your experience isn’t normal so you should look over the compensating factors more closely.

Oh. Gotcha. Well, seems like you’re killing it. Congrats. I’ll get my 3.5 GPA tat covered over now. 😁

What if someone has a lower GPA (not terrible), but they worked two jobs through college because their family couldn’t afford to pay tuition and they didn’t want $100k in debt? But they showed up everyday and put in all their effort. Is that person a worse candidate than someone that has a 4.0 with some cheesy school extra curriculars?

Strategy doesn’t exist at Accenture anymore. It’s a bust.

That’s because you are in Deloitte 😅 Seriously soeaking, kudos! Keep it up!

I had a 2.9 in high school and a 2.8 in college and I crush projects, don’t think education system is a bust but it certainly doesn’t cater to everyone. I also just did enough to get by and prioritized other parts of my life.

Sigh.. last night I felt adventurous and young. Tried to relive my youth and attempted to jump a road barrier..

Foot got caught, and I came crashing down on my arm and hip. The drivers looked at me like an idiot as I rolled around in agony for 3 minutes, with one guy honking in support as he drove by.

As I sit here in bed icing my hip, my mind takes me back to my younger days pre-consulting, when I wasn't an old 27 year old uncle. Need to get back in shape.

Seriously thinking of life outside of consulting. Need work life balance. Thinking of a government job or maybe taking up contracting.

Girlfriend isn’t affectionate at all. Super low sex drive to where I’m almost always sexually frustrated or unsatisfied. A complete 180 from my ex. Things were alright when we first started dating. I could tell she was very inexperienced but at least she tried. Been dating for two years now and I’ve brought up breaking up 3 times since year 1 and she kept making up excuses and says she’d change but never even makes an attempt to. Going to call it quits now. Also we live together. Any tips?
