I was in remedial math in elementary school and nearly failed 7th or 8th grade math. Ended up minoring in math in college and have done mostly quantitative work since then.

I think I was a late bloomer. Wasn’t until I started seeing the future career implications of my academics, and discovered economics and finance, that I started to change. I’m generally incapable of doing well at something unless I have a strong inner drive to do so.

Amazing how teachers are able to make math so terrible to learn. Have thought about becoming a math teacher in my next life.

I'm like you. I was a late bloomer, too. And that's in almost anything I do. But here I am, I succeeded. Never in my life did I think I'd have an MBA and certifications, and that I'd be a manager doing analytics. I was not even in any quant major in school. School work is not always indicative of one's future.

So glad you’ve hit an achievement that clearly is meaningful to you. Also, teasing this out a bit - sorry that you potentially have internalized Special Ed as meaning “less than” and may have thought you would have to settle for less in terms of great expectations for yourself. I don’t think that’s coming from you, being in Special Ed seems to stigmatize children who learn materials in different ways. In all honesty, I think that’s driven from people not understanding what Special Ed is. (We have 2 special Ed, one speech pathologist, and an occupational therapist in our family.)

I hope you’ll savor this achievement but also explore the value of “different” and diverse ways of working within the world. You never were and never will be “less than.” Congratulations on your achievement!

The lesson here..if anyone has a child struggling in school, don’t give up on them.

likeupliftinghelpfulsmart

I hear you. I had an IEP and was special ed classes now I make more money than all the people who didn’t think I’d amount to anything

Life is not static.

I was one of those students who struggled early in school because of learning disabilities. Now I run circles around people. You have to remind kids that just because you have to work three times as hard as other kids now does not mean it will always be the case.

I vented my frustrations through sports and working out. My parents never let me internalize it. They showed me examples of people who had similar challenges growing up and became extremely successful

Oh hey y’all, can I join the party?

With you on the special ed classes and proving the haters wrong every day. Far from the typical path into consulting, but I made it!

Thanks for sharing your stories. This gives me hope for my 5 yo that is getting ready to start kindergarten in the fall. We are fighting tooth and nail to get him the services he needs (and then some). Knowing that others have succeeded makes our fight all the more important.

Any tips for parents of kids who are struggling now? How to get them to stick with it?

Wasn’t in special ed classes or anything like that, but every single teacher I ever had up until middle school (except 1) thought I wouldn’t amount to much. I was terrible in class, couldn’t pay attention, hated reading, just cared about recess. What turned me around was getting my first B on a spelling test in the 5th grade. Up until that point I thought I wasn’t good enough, thought maybe I was too stupid. That one score changed my life. Guiding you child to that “first” success will make them like going back to class the next day. It did for me, now here I am.

Congratulations, you should be incredibly proud of your accomplishments. I know you don’t have to be reminded, but this is just the beginning. Don’t stop pushing yourself and never get complacent. You have much more to accomplish!

I have a son who is on IEP and it can be heartbreaking to watch him struggle. However, I always tell him every kid has a superpower we just need to find his. I know we will because he builds legos way above his age. Never give up!

I struggled with math at a junior stage , then went to engineering. Legos are inspirational way of communicating ideas, I was one of them

You’re awesome. Thank you for proving the formula of Ivy League + top MBA isn’t always the path to success in our field. I came from shift industry myself, looking to top out at maybe 65K a year. I constantly check myself that from meager beginnings, I make amazing money and have won some respect in my field. Ambition, enthusiasm and charisma carry a lot more weight than people realize.

This post is awesome and really gives me hope for my kids. Both of them are on IEP’s and integrated classrooms (special ed teacher and regular teacher). I am always so worried for my kids and how they’ll do in life. I struggle for them as much as I can to get them help so that they will be ok. To all the parents with IEP kids I know how hard it is!

Thank you for sharing! Easily my favorite post since I joined fish bowl. I wasn’t in special ed classes but overcame personal challenges to reach a similar point. My first child is due in eight weeks also. So many “feels” reading OP and the comments. Thank you again for sharing, and to all the comments along the way.

Congratulations. I was the same way. I did not graduate high school on time, went into the military. Got bachelors and dual masters and now work in IT architecture and am on pace to make $175k this year. I did not realize my potential until Uncle Sam brought it out in me. We ALL have potential we just need it unlocked in one way or another

Was just told that I need surgery and, per doctors, I would spend a week at the hospital and recovery could be anywhere between 6-9 weeks. I’m currently on a project and I’m on the critical path. It’s a medical matter and don’t want to go into the details with them but don’t want to make them feel as if I’m just dropping the ball.
