Call your insurance company too.
Renters insurance should cover it
Buy an indoor ring camera and activate when you aren’t home

Do you lock your apartment? Not close the door, actually lock it?
You can open most apartment doors with a piece of plastic in less than a second (and the others in 2 seconds), unless you put a key in and lock every time you leave.
Hopefully you didn’t lose much. Happened a bunch in my old building. People were shocked they had to actually use a key when they left. Like magic, thefts stopped.

The top lock is the important one
That’s scary. Sorry that happened to you.
Whoa that is terrifying... Any change you could move? I'd be very freaked, you must feel unsafe.
I’m horrified . We are moving soon but that may now be expedited

Can you say what building or area so that I stay away when I move?
Did they break or pick the lock? How did they get in?
So does someone possibly have a key? Maybe consider changing the locks
Did any other apt in the building get hit or just yours? A bit odd if not, def change the locks. Run it by your building management first, I had to pay a huge fee after I had a new lock put in (lockout) and it didn't fit the building master key.
Just ours. They think it’s an inside job within my building .
They took my old passport but new one was with me. But it appears they did take things including credit cards and started using the cards in Brooklyn and bronx
The plot thickens . My diamond jewelry doesn’t appear to be taken or my designer bags . Just my entire (broken in to) closet was searched and dumped out .
That leads to a few other questions:
• Is your closet a built-in closet with the internet box in there? (It doesn't justify the act of breaking into a tenant's apartment and personal items unannounced. Just thinking about different possibilities.)
• Does anyone else aside from the workers, you and who you gone to vacation with have keys to your home?
• Does anyone else know what's inside your closet? It sounds like they were looking for something and left after not being able to do so.
• Now, the last possibility I can think of - was your closet tidied up before you left for vacation?
--
If your building has a tenant app, should probably double check if there were any communication/notifications that a worker went into your apartment while you were on vacation to do any maintenance work (my building is also doorman with workers who have keys to all the apartments. Our lease has it written that tenants are informed and agree to allow the workers to go into apartments even when we're not home, only if reallyyy necessary. Very unsettling and felt unsafe with that in mind, however so far any time they do respond to a repair and I'm not home, they call me for permission to enter.)
Notify your bank of the checks, switch accounts, and ensure no hidden camera or something was planted or left behind either. I hope this will be resolved soon. I'm sorry you are dealing with this after your vacation.
