I had a partner go straight to the staff 1 to ask questions and not talk to me or the Manager on the client. The staff was terrified that she messed up since she didn’t know the answer. Is it weird that I feel like it was wrong for the partner to go to the staff who started 3 weeks ago?

It’s not weird but it is very annoying for the manager. We had a partner that would reach out to the last available person on a team and often times it was the associate just bc that’s who sending out the emails. The associate should direct the partner to speak to the manager, but very few think quick enough on the spot to do that. The partner then would give action items and the staff’s brain would be fried and they’d forget, then the manager would never know about it, and it’s a total mess. The partner should go to the manager, and the associate should send the partner to the manager, this way drama and conflict is avoided

Why is it wrong? Did the partner intimidate or threaten the staff in some way? Or did she simply ask the staff a question and accepted “I don’t know.” as the response when it was received?

I understand the staff was terrified but not sure how she will learn to progress and interact with others without practice. Internal is safer than external to learn. And once she realizes there’s no reprisals from saying “I don’t know.” then the next interaction won’t be so terrifying. I hope.

The partners very blunt and can come off intimidating often. I think it’s a great learning experience for the staff. It’s just not how the manager or I would have gone about it

like

No i dont think it is weird at all. Maybe the partner just wanted to start the convo to get to know the new staff? why the staff is terified tho? did the partner appear to be rude or something?

like

The partner is really blunt and if you don’t know that it can come off as rude. The staff was scared because she didn’t know the answer and thought she was suppose to

like

I think it’s a little weird. The way I’ve always seen interactions go is whoever is reviewing something asks questions to the last level of review. If it was a simple question, maybe it makes sense if they just wanted an answer to finish the project and you and the manager were busy?

like

We weren’t busy where we couldn’t answer the question. It was a tax technical question that went over the staffs head

I think it’s good as it allows partner and staff 1 to start building a good working relationship. I don’t find it weird at all. The partner knows the staff 1 may not know the answer. I think the point is to create an open door environment and to allow for learning by the staff 1. It also helps the partner assess when the staff is ready for more client interaction.

like

Yeah, it is kind of weird that this is very upsetting to you. If you and the manager were busy, if it was a quick question, or if the partner was looking for an opportunity to start a conversation and give attention to a new team mate…

Sorry your associate was scared but they need to get over it. Talking to leadership is part of the job. Just human beings.

A partner can’t talk to the staff? Why? If the partner knows they are new, I’m sure their expectations are in line.

Hi,

May I know what is a good salary for a R&D project engineer(2 YOE) in a semiconductor industry in Belgium?

I am looking to leave my very small law firm firm and considering going to a much larger firm. I have some clients that were brought in by other partners but I am deeply entrenched in their work. It would not be easy for another lawyer to get up to speed, but the client contact is technically with another lawyer and I am working with that lawyer also on the file. I also have one client where we could really use some more bodies on the file. More in comments.

Half a year into the new gig and realize it’s not what I want to do. I don’t think I realized the pros of a manager role for a large company at the time, or even a service line change within big four. My daily tasks are repetitive and not challenging and there’s more small stuff to deal with. What should my next move be?
