I agree with the lesson learned to communicate, but that's still really rough. I'm surprised they didn't just ask you to take a leave of absence to get yourself together after going through that instead of going right to a PIP. I'm really sorry OP - that's terrible.

I’ve never been on a PIP but I have had to administer them. I would say improve performance much faster than the plan, keep track of your recent accomplishments and let the boss know it was a wake up call.
Probably so. Just do what you’re capable of as a top performer and you will be good

Did you eventually explain why your performance was impacted? If you did I’m sure that will be taken into consideration during this period. Agree, that if your performance picks up and returns to normal this will be just a blip in your career. I took over a PIP from another manager (the manager got deployed) for someone who ended up working for me and I never held it against them.
D1 yes I fully explained. I’m doing the whole 9 and worked w their mental health group (ey assist) and they found an outside person for me to speak with-it’s going well.
However, when I spoke with talent and with my counselor throughout this process it has felt very disingenuous.
