Totally appropriate! If those values and behaviors are important to you (they are for me too) then you need to understand the culture. If the culture is like some comments here, equating equity with activism or belittling the importance of D&I, you will want to steer clear.
Yeah well sometimes i wish i had the luxury of thinking it was activism. It’s not, it’s pretty essential to my well being.
Better to find that out now than after joining the firm...
OP, did you go for an interview for a corporate position or for an activist's position? Sounds to me like you want to set up an activist shop in there.
As another non US native, I sometimes get baffled with these concerns. I’m just grateful for the opportunities that are available in this country. I believe these things only hinder your career if you let it.
*And then everyone stood up and clapped*
You know what? I’m glad i asked it. And if the company doesn’t like me asking it, i don’t want to work for them. How’s that. Rude responses.
So you disagreeing with the responses makes them rude? That tells us everything we need to know about your mentality.
Why’d you ask the question in the first place if you already knew it was the right thing to do. Go work at SPLC and you can live and breathe the incessant straight white Christian patriarchy.
Not inappropriate, but risky. An organization like that could still have an ass backwards mindset.
Amen to that
You asked if discrimination is rampant in the organisation. Did you expect honesty in the case that discrimination is rampant?
Furthermore, single trait identification is a social crutch and is detrimental to our progress as a society.
That trait is pretty important to me and has proved to be a differentiator in how i was treated at work in the past. Not sure why i asked people’s opinions on here bc after reading these replies it solidified my reason for asking even further.
H1, OP needs the job. The firm has other choices. BCG1, had the perfect response - TMI on the first date. You don't bring up your parents and political views on a first date, do ya? Same in this instance. Ultimately, I do hope things work out for OP but going gung-ho about these things on the first interview could be viewed negatively in my opinion... First interview should be about what you bring to the table skill wise and experience wise and why the firm should consider investing on you as an employee
It is a director level role in hr. this was a final round. I asked when pressed about “any other questions?”
Totally appropriate. Better to know before you join a company.
As a POC and LGBT I get what you’re going for. Honestly a little dicey if she didn’t connect the dots but I think more likely she understood. How they treat A is usually a good indicator of how they treat B, and vice versa. Sadly it’s telling how long some orgs have to go by the responses in this thread.
During my interview with the one woman of colour in leadership, i asked her if she felt like D&I was a priority and how that affects culture. I piggy backed off her answer to ask if she feels like she is listened to, heard, respecter, included, etc... I identified myself as a member of the lgbt community and mentioned it would be important to me that a woman of colour in leadership be afforded all the respect and deference her Male and non-POC colleagues should. Not bc lgbt=poc but it tells me how they will treat someone different from them.
Was that inappropriate?
I think you were smart to bring it up. If it is important to you to work in a place where you can be authentic and not suffer ramifications, then you need to understand the culture. I once pulled myself out of consideration because none of my interviewers were women and I only saw one woman in the office. That is not a place I want to work. Full stop.
