I had been just relocated to another office, in a country where LGBT culture is not always supported openly (unlike NYC where I was). I was wearing my ACN Pride Ally lanyard...

As a gay man... thank you for being an ally and wearing it. While you have a choice in this situation - there are millions of us who don’t have the option to just leave it at home. Think about it that way.

I am an Out MD Lesbian in Toronto office. Thank all of these amazing allies for your support. Being able to be your authentic self at work is a huge part of bringing diversity of thought to the table and to our clients. Make sure to connect with our LGBT ERG in your new region for support or our Executive sponsor. DM me if you need any support or connections.

Your privilege is that you can take that lanyard off and go back to your normal life. We can’t. Please keep wearing it, and advocating for us so that we can be ourselves at work without hate or discrimination. It’s also invaluable to have an ally openly advocate, it literally brings a smile to my face when I see one. Over the years it has given me the courage to “wear my badge” whether that means at work, or when I’m out in the world just living my life openly.

Please continue to wear it. I did 8 months in Asia and wore my Ally badge and it started a number of amazing conversations.

(Had thought twice about it previously, but decided to go for it), and one Manager (in my team) had made a comment about it. He asked me where I got it from, and I told him it’s from Accenture. He then told me “Isn’t that creepy?”. I had an internal reaction to how bigoted that comment was, but said nothing. He went on to tell me that he’s more conservative. Then I told him where I was (NYC) people are open about this. That was the end of the convo. Now I’m beginning to think that maybe I shouldn’t wear the lanyard around here. I’m straight (not that it matters), but I do deeply believe that anyone should be free to love whomever and be themselves. But given the country that I’m in, maybe I should leave this belief at home. Esp if there is a chance that I have a client who feels strongly against LGBT. FYI I’ve see a few others in the ACN office here who wore this same lanyard. But perhaps it’s just more controversial here.

Try less

It’s a lanyard. You’re beliefs don’t hinge on a lanyard. You can still have your convictions without a display. You’re there to work, not push opinions or agendas. If you think this is bad, then I hope you never take an engagement in the ME.

M1 funny enough I’m actually in one of the countries you mentioned above. That is why I’m thinking twice about wearing it. I don’t feel 100% safe to be honest, but I’ve seen people within the ACN office here who does wear it. Which is why I thought that maybe it’s okay if I were to wear it too. I even spoke to some allies. On the other hand I’ve also heard some homophobic comments from MD’s and others in the office expressed very publicly.

So I worked in a country where it was « illegal to be gay and people were being thrown in jail ». I’m not sure what country you are in but I would say always put your safety first. It doesn’t matter if you are straight, you might be putting a target on your back. If it is more of just a controversial topic, then I think your gesture of wearing a pride lanyard is needed a lot more than you think. That lanyard symbolizes so much. For people who’ve been ridiculed by friends or beaten by their families for being gay, it is more than just a lanyard. Just because one person at your office made a comment about it doesn’t mean that your efforts are not noticed. I’m sure there are people who feel a sign of relief when they see you.

This is very powerful, I agree with everything you say here. Thank you CA1 🤗

What he said wasn’t right, but people are entitled to their beliefs.

Is this in Singapore?

Agree, on the surface, the Singapore office seems to have quite a number of LGBT allies. In person however, some may not necessarily support LGBTs in terms of their thinking. Some LGBT juniors have been made fun of by an American/Singapore SM/MD or colleagues.

Continue to be “Truly Human”

Yep, I mentioned my husband (I’m male) to my team in Chennai, India and the vacant STARES I got before they switched quickly to Tamil... But I feel like I hid for SO long as a kid, I’m beyond being self-conscious and too proud of who I am to be too concerned. Also, I was teaching them how to do their jobs and outranked them?? 😂 The awkwardness (and potential anxiety) of coming out over and over and over again at work on projects is something that straight people will never directly experience.

I went through a pretty rigorous interview process for a marketing project manager but ultimately wasn't given job. Though most of the feedback was positive, the other candidate had more direct experience with the job responsibilities (digital assets, social media, etc.) My job/company dabbles in digital but it's primarily traditional media. How do I again the experience if I'm limited by the type of work we do?
