I have been in this position more often than not unfortunately... I graduated in 09 and had to take whatever his was available... moved quite a bit to subpar positions and it took 10 years to find the right fit.... the takeaway is that I did and am finally content BUT it was a long hard road and takes time, perseverance and opportunity. Leverage your network, always do the best job you can and strive to impress people. I truly believe that “who you know” is a valuable asset but it’s not about someone just doing you a favor, the people you work with who value your work will be the ones who help you further your career. They will not help you simply because the “know” you, but because they know and respect your work. Good luck.

(Cont’d) ... work is my main thing. It’s not like the “easier” job is much easier, it still requires a lot of hours, but pays less than the other option I was considering, work is not as interesting to me, and the exit options are not as good if I decide to exit.
My previous job was my dream job but I got laid off due to covid so I had to scramble to find a replacement and accept one quickly. I know I’m lucky to have found a replacement at all but I feel so sad about this step down from where I was.
Covid isolation is also hitting me hard. Partly I chose the new job due to location closer to friends/family but it’s all remote to start, so I don’t get that benefit till post-covid and that feels so far away and indefinite. Moving right now is not an option for financial reasons.

Is there a way to use this job or this time to develop other skills or interests? I don’t particularly like my job right now either but am a bit stuck for the next year so am developing other areas of my life to make up for my lack of interest at work. I am content to be an average performer at work while I figure out my next steps.
