I hate calling parents! What helps you out in making parent contact?

Email works for me. I also use Google Classroom for contact. There is a function to link in parent/guardians on Google Classroom. You can also use apps, such as Remind and ClassTag.

I like that google classroom feature-then parents can see the resources that I have made available and the explanations of the assignments. There should be no questions then about what the students were to complete!

I use the remind app! I have the code ready on open house and I encourage all students and parents to sign up. I send out daily reminders about HW and up coming tests/quizzes. I also put the code to join on the first progress report and report cards

Call or email students in the first week! Be positive! Tell parents that you have looked forward to having their child in your class. Then later in the year when you have a problem you have already established positive lines of communication. I hate contacting parents too but it is part of the job!

I usually use Class Dojo to message parents when possible. If it’s something really major, I’ll call the parent during lunch and have the student explain what happened. I still have to make the phone call, but I find that it’s less uncomfortable than doing all the talking myself, and I find it more effective behavior management wise too. I teach third grade though; I’m not sure how it would work for high school.

Having my own kid that started school last year. No joke. Before last year, I hated calling parents. Once my son started school, it was much easier. I guess i has the mindset, if this was my kid, would I want to know and address this issue as a parent? That gave me the confidence to call parents more

like

1. I psych myself into it. I hate using the phone in general. I write my key points, positive and negative down so I can stay on track. I write everything the parent says down. I hate phone calls. Did I mention that? I’ve been teaching 25 years and still prefer written communication. See #2 & 3. 😬 2. I try to make contact via email that way what I say can not be misquoted. I always point out the good stuff first. Then with empathy and concern, I bring up what needs to be addressed. Finally, I thank them for being committed to their child’s success. 😉 3. Send positive general notes/newsletters home every few weeks. I’m not organized enough to do them weekly. 🤪

For what purpose are you calling parents?

Any and all. Positive or negative I still struggle

Our synergy (attendance and gradebook) site has an all-call feature, where you can send messages to specific groups of parents all at once.

Did you have to decide on remote vs hybrid school for your kid/s? We are supposed to make a final choice this week for the remainder of the school year and I'm struggling with it, even though I think I know what we should choose. I'm just so exhausted from operating in survival mode and worried we'll get it wrong because things are changing so fast we can't predict what spring could bring.

I found out today that my employer doesn’t offer any paid parental leave (maternity or paternity). This isn’t a major issue now, but my wife and I are planning on trying in a year or so from now. How many other employers don’t offer any paid leave at all? Coming from public accounting this seemed outrageous to me, but curious to see what other companies are like.

I think I’m falling for my mother in law. The feelings aren’t necessarily sexual in nature. They seem to be much deeper and emotional feelings—which I get would concern my wife more so than sexual feelings. It doesn’t help that everyone thinks my MIL finds me to be her “favorite” in addition to some other complicating nuances. Obviously, I won’t act on these feelings, but as the years go by, the closer we’re going to get since she’s around a lot and we talk quite often when we’re alone.

Has anyone here been in the situation where you’ve been taking a prescribed ADD drug for years and now want to stop for pregnancy? Been taking it for 18 years and truly need it in order to function/concentrate. I have been trying to wean off it, but with filings & trial coming up, I don’t see how I can. I really want to get pregnant (already have frozen embryos ready to go via IVF) and am almost 40. I’m consulting with my dr, but was wondering if anyone else has advice from their own experience.

I was also a victim of sexual, physical, verbal, & emotional abuse from a step parent I love my bf more than anything, & I do not want to break up, but I keep fantasizing about cheating on him (Cont. in comments)
