This is one of the reasons I'm leaving public accounting soon. It takes a lot of work setting your own personal boundaries like that and the additional stress required to do it just to get time off is too much for me. Taking AS1's example - why are x, y, and z the only things you're able to get done before you leave? If you're leaving the office at 5 everyday then I certainly feel like you could take on an additional task before you're out for a week or two. it will also reduce your backlog of all the shit that comes up while you're gone that you'll have to get to upon return. Idk some ppl are really good at this and more power to them, I just have no idea what's reasonable and what's not as far my workload for any given week after the last five years of insanity
Just tell them "I have x, y, and z scheduled before my vacation. I can get to your b/s upon my return, or you can speak to (insert other manager(s) name(s)) if your thing needs to get done before their thing."
^I am in the same boat Tax Manager 1. I'm not leaving at 5 everyday. The reason I can only get a few things done before leaving is that I'm being pulled 50 different directions.
