I hate telling people I work for Facebook. 90% of them always have something smart to say about how FB is destroying the world. Dude, I don't care. It's just another company, please go whine about something else.

OP, as you know we live in a (mostly) free speech world, with the trade-off of exposing ourselves inevitably to other people’s whining & opinions. Nobody is asking you to quit your job, and to be fair FB offers a lot of positive innovations & alternatives (in exchange for aggregating traceable user data for advertisers & app developers to analyze & build monetizable business models from) to traditional interactive communication (ex. FB Messenger vs. long-distance telephone; Instagram vs. mailing physical snapshots for extended family photo albums; etc.). That said, just for the sake of you not landing into exhausting verbal pissing contests, instead of saying “it’s just another company,” some better choice of words can be “it is an interactive technology platform; how people use it is their choice. If anyone does not appreciate it, they can choose not to use it - such as how Communist China and other clear totalitarian governments do not allow it, or go find other platforms w/ more exclusivity/member screening &/or likely have paid subscription models to get the services you want.” That should give people some pause to make them realize that the Facebook platform is what they make of it.

BDE1, this is fair. I see where you're coming from!

I interviewed with FB and got a lot of flack from friends for even entering the interview process. Honestly, I felt weird about it too. It is tough because I know people who work at FB who love it and who I think are sincerely motivated to do good. I think the reality of working for any for-profit company though is that it is bound to prioritize profits over people, which FB does, and is why it’ll do anything just to increase engagement with no regard to the wellbeing of its users.

I think the fact that you say you "don't care" that FB/Meta is "destroying the world" is a (big?) part of the issue....

like

You don’t seem to understand that the REST of us are the victims - sometimes fatally so - of the others who get sucked in.

like

It’s not another company, it is destroying the world. You should feel not-great about it. Are all companies destroying the world somewhat? Sure. Do most other companies have a founder who ends meetings by saying “company over country”? Are most other companies actively aiding fascist dictators and actual genocides? Facebook is up there with Fox News, Purdue Pharma and RJ Reynolds in terms of harm. Let’s not delude ourselves. It is PRETTY hilarious that your biggest defender in this thread works at Amazon though. 🤣😂

likefunny

You’re right, we’re being real bummers about the whole “ruining democracy and empowering dictators” thing. 🤣🤣😅 I didn’t realize Fox and Breitbart were minority owned. You could make the “but it creates jobs” argument about anything. OxyContin, cartels, semi automatic weapons. On the contrary, you aren’t being introspective enough and it’s discouraging to see that Facebook employees are even more callous and flippant about their corps immense power than I imagined. Every tech company is scummy, but that doesn’t let you off the hook or make you less scummy. My takeaway in this thread is that tech folks are so morally flexible, you make the ad industry look like prudes.

Then tell em you work for Meta instead

funnylike

Are you being sarcastic?

There's a cognitive dissonance between the stated ideals of the company and the demonstrated behavior. That will make any thinking person uneasy. If there's anything people despise almost universally, it's hypocrisy. It would serve Facebook well to either tone down the idealism speak or ramp up the transparency in a way that engenders more trust. The sentiment you see and hear, as misplaced as you may think it is, reflects a disdain and lack of trust.

@SE2 personally, when I see it on a resume these days it’s a strike against the candidate for me - it suggests that they will not be partners in building a supportive environment.

A3 and VMWare are right. Like, stop bitching and accept you work for a bad conglomerate. I used to work for VZ. I recognize they had a lot of problems, but they treated me well and taught me a lot. Doesn't change the fact that they are a dubious company putting their customers through shit. You should acknowledge and accept you work for a shitty company, OP, and move on.

Fb and Zuck are pretty terrible for society, theres no denying that whether you work there or not. But most people criticize and still use fb, insta, messenger, whatsapp. Undeniably there are also a TON of positive innovations that wouldn’t exist today without FB. That being said most SWE’s would go nuts at a chance to work at fb. It is still the best resume booster/prestigious engineering org behind google

@SE2, name ONE thing Zuck has done that has been terrible for societY?

I had someone who works for a crypto company say I was unethical for working for a bank, quoting discrimination and overcharging- as if I am responsible for systemic problems. It would be like me blaming them in turn for a terrorist attack that was funded by crypto. People are quick to hop on the hate bandwagon, hypocritical as it often is. Most SWEs would work for FB. Not just b/c it pays well but other reasons like the culture (IT is not a second class employee to business) and opportunities (boot camp to pick team).

Yeah, that's so immature to define someone's professional strengths and beliefs based off of their where they've worked.

Given the right opportunity, I would take a job at Meta any day. It's a great company with amazing people and a fantastic opportunity to do good in the world. The main reason why public opinion is much worse for Meta, than it is for rest of FAANG is that journalists have collectively realized that Meta is the biggest threat to the livelihood of their long outdated business model. Honestly, traditional media is a bigger threat to democracy than Facebook is.

There you go again! You're the gift that keeps on giving. ❤️

People are stupid. Facebook is pretty terrible though. Can’t believe you work there. JK man. I used to represent Facebook at my old firm and wrote some cool patents for Oculus, which everyone loves. A lot of people can’t compartmentalize things and get hung up on one thing they don’t like about a company and ignore all the things they use or like about that company. Get that money and then when you’re rich maybe you can join the Red Cross.

like

@VMW1, I guess you think cause VMWare isn't in the media or facing backlash, they are doing good in the world? I bet they have just as crooked of a history as the others, every big business has

Here’s my thought. Folks who are against Facebook…shouldn’t use Facebook. Right? You’re just trying to make a living. I have friends who are equally against Amazon and refuse to purchase from the company in protest. Totally fine. But we all have to decide what’s most important—what 𝙤𝙪𝙧 values are. It would take an immense effort of many, many people refusing to use services/make purchases from such large companies. So let’s just…let people live.

@vmware 1 maybe we save a little of that judgement of the OP for ourselves…

Your on here complaining about people who complaint to you that FB is destroying the world. Take your own advice: we don’t care that you are offended or annoyed. Go whine about something else, like the homeless lowering your home value or the fact I used your instead of you’re.

So my husband and I decided to go back to our original plan and starting to try for a baby next month. My daughter will be 18 months old and it’s been a struggle with work and her in general with covid and no daycare or outside help. I’m down to part time hours already with the intention of her hopefully being able to go to daycare in the summer or fall. I really want to complete my family but worry about not having help with two kids. Plus I dk how long it could take to get pregnant this time
