Hi Fishies! (Is that what we are? I’m going with it)
I just came across a Google Research and Insights role that got me SUPER excited and I was about to apply when I had the idea of seeing if anyone would be willing to give me a referral. I understand (and respect) that most of you Googlers on here feel that a referral is only useful if you know the person but I would be happy to jump on the phone to give you some info about me. It would mean so much! 4 YOE at a major audio steaming service

Nah sounds about right. I have seen people with more experience working for less. You can shoot for more but this will easily tide you over in nyc
Levels.fyi my friend
Leetcode and FANG as soon as you humanly can. There’s no point being an SWE outside FANG.
I am applying to fang right now ha.
I agree not everyone is motivated by building cars, but there’s still something to be said about the lack of physical products being made by FAANG other than computers. It’s all a bunch of software commodities. I just like working on products I can touch and feel personally. Working on the “can you make this dashboard for us” projects are… kinda old for me. I’m good at web development but bored of doing web pages ahhh.
I am someone that is motivated by building cars but do want more money than in being offered at ford. The interview and application process of getting into FAANGs is a bit confusing to me. I’ve had “interviews” with both Google and Amazon.
Met with a PM at Waymo for lunch on a Google campus and then had an interview for a sales role I didn’t apply for the very next day… I didn’t get it. The main question was weird they asked me “tell us about a time you’ve convinced someone to do something for you”. I talked about how I used to sneak into the photo pit of music festivals and get past security guards. Recruiter didn’t like that answer haha. If I was asked that nowadaysI’m not even sure how I would answer that — I don’t really try to go around and “convince people” of anything? Lol— my mom asks me about projects around the house and people ask me about coding projects. But it’s usually all asking for my opinion and I’m not motivated enough to “**convince** my mom that the brown colored chair is better than the tan colored one”.
My Amazon “interview” was from a campus event after I handed my resume to the Amazon recruiter and got invited to play bumper cars the same day I had terrible food poisoning and was puking…. remember actually kinda snapping at the recruiter who tried to get me to play a 3rd game of ‘wirly ball bumper cars’ (look it up) so the teams were fair when I didn’t want to. Everyone else was only playing one game and taking to the recruiters while I was just playing fucking bumper cars after puking in the morning.
Didn’t leave a good impression with either of these recruiters and haven’t applied since and we’re back on the horse.
A bit tangential, but I don’t feel like intern/part-time experience is valued enough if it’s pre-grad. I have almost 3 years of design/UI/FE Dev and still got shoved at the lowest comp bracket at the startup I’m on.
Maybe I drew the short straw but the advice I was given was to learn as much as I can for 2 years then dip since prospects are much better then.
Living in NYC rn and leaving my first job for another position after 1 year out of college. For reference, that role had a base salary of around 110K which I felt was pretty standard if not a bit lower for NY tech (Was working remote with the team located in Seattle but this salary was very livable for NYC).
Definitely recommend checking levels.fyi to know your worth. Anyone feel free to correct me :)
Great to hear! So I only kept interviewing until I got a job I felt aligned with what I wanted in a company (good wlb and location). There wasn’t really a specific time for me, but I started the course in July and started seriously applying mid August, and the interview process for the company I am going to took 3 weeks. I would say I was never in a rush since the job I’m leaving was very nice to begin with but I think someone could complete a transition to a new job in 1month-2months depending on how confident you are in interviews going in (I wanted to finish the portions of the course I wasn’t great in to make sure I was confident before I started applying to serious companies)
Yes. Entry level FAANG in NYC is about 150k base.
This is a bit low for entry level OP. fwiw I’m in Austin and most entry level swe roles here start in the low 6 figures
I hope you commute or do WFH! That pay is a little low but not outside of reason. I know plenty of people who started around that amount.
You should honestly be very grateful, you're fresh out of college and that is a great salary. NYC employers are infamous for nickel and diming young employees. My advice: focus on your work, not your salary, man.
Internal gratitude is good, but it’s not mutually exclusive with pushing for market pay
