I have $100K just sitting in Ally and it is making me anxious with the low return. It is hypothetically for a down payment in the next year. But is there anything better for a short term investment than a HYSA getting 0.6%?

If a rock solid bank account with .6% return makes you anxious, I don’t think you want to start taking on any potential downside at all 😛

Look into I-bonds at treasurydirect.gov if can keep $10k tied up for at least a year. 0.50% PLUS inflation compounded semiannually...there is an FAQ on website...but rate is only good through end of this month(but 0.5%+inflation is fixed for life of bond if purchase before reset)-they reset every 6 months. Most of the time TIPS bonds outyield I-bonds, so not something commonly used...but 5-years TIPS are priced at -1.24% last time I looked...so you get a whole lot less than the usual spread with TIPS today.

Why not bond etf for like 4%

If you need the money in a year... it’s best to keep to there in my opinion... you can shop around for slight key higher rates, but not worth it in my opinion. I’m at .75

Backdoor Roth question. I get you put the money into your Traditional IRA then convert to Roth, but what happens the subsequent year if you want to back door again? Do you have to open a new traditional IRA and convert to a new Roth? Assuming you’re not eligible to contribute to a Roth in the first place (hence why you’re doing the back door) I assume you’re never able to contribute post-tax funds to that newly converted Roth unless you meet Roth income requirements?

(1/2) As my first full year of practice comes to a close, it looks like my pre-tax salary for this fiscal year year will be just short of $400k — after year end bonuses are distributed next month (the 400k figure also includes my low base, but 75% of it reflects bonus). As of now, before my bonus has come in, I’ve got 193k student loans, 60k in investments, and 20k in savings. How much of the bonus should I use to pay student loans, and how much should I contribute to my investment portfolio?

Anybody had experience helping spouse or close friend get over the mental block of investing, due to their growing up poor/having to support their parents and thus being unnecessarily conservative with money? Caveat that they work in finance/investment so they understand fully that historically stock markets have done ~10% return on an annualized basis. But their excuse is since they work in investment, they’ve seen too many trades/funds blowing up etc.
