I have 2 offers, one from a great company 50% raise in hcol city. The other less known company 10% raise, but in my home city close to my parents (I have 3 kids). Help me choose.

If your parents are <60, go HCoL. If >60, go stay close to them.

Family. Every time. You can’t put a value on giving your kids more time with their grandparents (or vice versa)

like

What makes the HCOL option better? Yes, money, I understand. But like really, why is it better? What are you gonna do with the extra money? How is it gonna change your career positively?

like

Ask your kids if they have an opinion. My parents moved us a lot when I was younger without asking much how we felt about it and it complicated things.

like

Name the two cities

like

Depends on your age a bit and also your parent’s situation, distance between two cities, things that you like in the hcol, things that you hate and the job content in both the offers. Also, for each of these variables share the relative weights. We can model your decision.

Thank you, modeling didn’t work, that’s what makes this a difficult decision. One option wins on intangibles and the other wins on tangibles

How about talking to your spouse?

There was no mention of it. Only parents and kids. I've seen so many colleagues make decisions without thinking of the impact it will have on their spouse.

Give weightage to each of factor based on what you think as a family (not individual). Not all will be applicable to your case 1.Calculate salary after tax in both the places 2.Calculate expenses including schooling, rent , grocery(1-2) net 3.Parents are healthy . Decide based on that 4. Weather, opportunities, travel(assuming less travel) 5. Medical ( which company has better ) 6. Vacation or other perks

Family is always more important than work - use that as your decision point

There’s also possibly a third option unless where you’re living now is limited, which is stay at current role and just keep exploring better options

I work at a mid tier firm in an audit group of ~20 people. We’ve recently had two seniors and a manager leave, and I just found out another senior with a ton of big jobs is leaving in three weeks. I also just found out I’m being promoted to senior with a raise of 10%. In light of all these departures though, I kind of want to ask for more.... should I? And what % raise is appropriate? Any insight appreciated!

Newly promoted experienced hire SC making $113k, 10 YOE (switched industries). Got an offer from TCS in an Advisory practice (not the tech sweatshop stuff that I keep seeing people mention). Base salary is $190k and in TCS equivalent of a M role. Downside to taking the salary hike and boomeranging back to D in ~2 years? FYI - I have 2 kids, so that kind of pay raise is kind of a big deal.

How soon after a promotion do you think you can you ask for a raise? I am generally happy where I am, and was promoted internally 5months ago. After talking to a few friends at the same level at other agencies, I’m making the lowest end of what my title is worth out there. I did not think at the time that I could negotiate a promotion, so I took what I was given 🥲

I was laid off from a resource management role, working with employees approaching or on the bench, working with managers to staff projects, and support functions like report creation, scheduling, etc. Roles like this are few and many large consulting firms have frozen internal hiring. Do you think it would be beneficial to get a SHRM cert? Would that help get a "talent related" HR role? Worth the money? I have a background in recruitment as well.
