I have 30 years of experience, and I am thinking about starting a small design studio with a focus on brand identity for small to medium size companies. I can direct or execute any work needed, and I am comfortable with clients, but sales is not my strong point and I don’t want to spend my time searching for clients. I would like to partner with a sales expert who has creative industry experience. I would appreciate any advice or suggestions on resources to find a capable sales person. Thanks!

As a founder you need to do this yourself. However, I also recommend someone who has been instrumental in our firm at guiding our sales function with a lot of success - Scott Lee.

Maybe he can point you in the right direction?

I appreciate the contact. I have minimum startup capital, which is why I am looking for a lead generation expert who is interested in being a partner rather than someone I would need to pay a salary to. I’m not able to pay for a consultant at this time, but I’ll keep Scott’s info for the future.

Honestly, most people who start small businesses have to be good at sales and marketing because that’s the hardest part. I’m not saying you can’t outsource it, but it won’t be the same.

You can look into buying an existing firm with the kinda of work and clients that you’d like to focus on. Bizbuysell is a good website to browse for business listings or you can work with a business broker.

Curious as to whether your post led you anywhere? I just spent the past few years on a very similar path - with varying levels of success. DM me if you’d like to share insights.

I haven’t moved forward at this point. Still in the planning and consideration stage. I have done quite a bit of freelance work in the past, which was often work I received from placement agencies, or my own clients, but usually not the branding work I want to focus on. I did start a design studio over 20 years ago with two partners, and we were doing very well for 8 months, and then 9/11 happened and everything came to a screeching halt.

I have a direct report (~10 years of experience in mostly related jobs, 3 years with current firm) who sends me consistently poor grade work, and last night sent me a not-great deck at 2.15am (no one else on our team works that late, and there is no expectation that this person should), to meet a “Tuesday EOD” deadline. We need to up level the deck today- do I just redo their deck, or do I ask them to take another pass? They never asked me for help or input since this got assigned, either.

I'm about to turn 30 and have never had a long term serious relationship. I'm not muscular at all, have a dad bod, can't grow a beard, am losing the hair on my head meanwhile i have a chest full of hair and i usually find myself in the friend zone when trying to court a lady. I have this fear that I will never find anyone and will be alone my whole life because something is wrong with me. Rejection really hurts.

I WFH in IT and my job is pretty "chill". If I focus on work, I can get it done in 15-20 hours, and the remaining time is spent on upskilling/training. However, I'm thinking of putting that time towards a brick-and-mortar side hustle, a basic restaurant. An option that appeals to me is a hole in the wall coffee and bubble tea store, with a few sandwiches. A basic store with a small menu and high margin items, 2 staff on the payroll. Any success stories of people doing this on the side?

Bought 2 houses for 75k and put in 25k. The one I renovated appraised for 167k (Trying to sell it now, but it’s sitting with the market). There is also the second home that needs at least 100k of work. We just moved I don’t have the bandwidth to run a project and rent out the renovated property. I also don’t have the business experience and wouldn’t know where to start. How would I find a partner? Should I just sell both?
