My managing partner said of Camille Vasquez (Depp/Heard trial atty) that she was a terrible lawyer. He said he hated watching her. I don’t have as many years experience as a trial attorney so I don’t understand his comment. Was she horrible, and how? Or was she deserving of the social media praise?

Starting a new job in Pyrmont in January. Where should I live? I'm a single female in my early 30s, looking for 1BR ~$500/w. Ideally somewhere near the water/beaches.

Been doing some research and Pyrmont is a pain to get to. I'm new to Sydney so any advice is much appreciated!

Fellow millennial lawyers: tell me, in general terms, 1 or 2 clients you acquired and how you acquired them. I feel like the suggested strategies for developing business are always the same: network, build your brand (hate this phrase), market yourself on LinkedIn, etc. Does any of this work? Seems to me to that most business development comes from long-standing contacts (e.g. your childhood best friend is now CEO and needs legal services), so I’m curious how other attorneys developed business.

I going to my first in person conference since the pandemic. It’s Thursday and Friday. I was thinking about business casual on Thursday (light colored pants and black blazer). Would jeans be okay for Friday? I know as a law student I always looked super formal at any conference but would it still be needed as a practicing attorney?

Those of you with the Beis work tote (not the mini), do you think it’s too big of a bag for day to day carrying during a month long trial? I’m looking for something that can carry my laptop and a decent amount of supplies (notepads, personal care items, etc.) and have heard good things, but the work tote looks massive in the product photos online!

I moved out to the suburbs about 7 months ago. Between that and the pandemic I have lost touch with friends. I reach out as get “yea let’s hang” but when it comes to making definite plans, crickets. It’s been hard because work is so busy and I have my partners children around too. Struggling to reconnect now that ppl are hanging out again and I don’t get invited. Feeling super isolated and lonely.

I was fired last month after a short time at the company. I knew things weren't going well- it was a terrible culture fit & I was also planning my exit strategy. They wouldn't give me specific reasons other than to vaguely say it was performance related. I agree I made a few dumb mistakes (none of any dire consequence) but what kills me is that I tried really hard. I don't want to change careers but I have a deep seeded fear that no matter how hard I try, I will never be a "good attorney".

Had a talk with the partners Thursday, they said I’m not producing enough work at the end of each day. First year associate, new area of law, wfh so they are more “what are you doing every second”. They want me to start turning in a daily log (we are plaintiffs attorneys so no billing normally) any advice? While I appreciate their honesty, I feel like they consider me severely indebted to them that they hired me mid pandemic and “allow” me to work from home.

I quit. I was respectful. Thankfully, every person I have told has been so nice, and I wasn't immediately bounced out by my leadership (which has happened), but I have been surprised by my own bittersweet tears. If they actually cared, why didn't they say so sooner? I gave so much, and I was consumed by this organization. I invested in them, but my investment and dedication were not reciprocated, which is why I ever even entertained leaving. I don't know why it hurts, but it really, really does.

I’ve been asked to weigh in on how to improve my firms parental leave policy. It’s currently 8 weeks paid for birth parent with an extra week for each year at the firm (up to 12 weeks total) and 2 weeks paid for non-birth parent. I’m in a major city, firm is a boutique that has been around a very long time. What would you suggest? Any studies or research you’ve seen recently on trends in parental leave policies also helpful. I’d like to have some sort of data to back up what I recommend. TIA!
