Questioning may also be to get you the regulated Covid paid time off protocols separate from your sick days. You do not have to tell them why you are sick, but since you volunteered Covid they are able to inquire for not only prevention protocols but also to make sure you are provided access the Covid related regulations.
50? Do you mean 5? Employers are in a tough spot. They have to respect hippa, but they also have to risk manage for covid safety to all employees and have to manage special covid benefits. At least find out what is behind the ask before you jump ship. It could also just be one person who is over reactive out of fear.
Why are you telling them why you're sick when you don't have proof of whatever it is? Just take the sick day. You typically only need a doctor's note if you're out more than three days in a row. Could've been a migraine, food poisoning, depression, or whatever, but it's what sick leave is for.
I’m confused. Are they asking for a positive test to try and question your day off, or so they can put precautions in place if you’re positive? It sounds like you are going into the office. Also just sounds like they’re being cautious saying it could be a false negative.
You have 50 sick days a year and they won’t let you use one? Did you mean 5?
If you’re getting this much push back about having symptoms during a pandemic I would consider finding a new job. I know of people who tested 3 times for Covid before getting a positive test (and yes, they had symptoms by test 2)
I'm confused. Are they complaining about you using a sick day for flu like symptoms, or are they telling you, because potential COVID symptoms, you can't come back until you get a non-rapid test?
Because if it's the latter, that's standard protocol. My husband's place won't accept a rapid test as proof you can come back.
I think its more likely they were just worried about tracking anyone else who had contact with you, rather than you taking sick leave, so relax. No need for a new job yet!
You’re either seeking opinions, facts or agreement. You seem to have accumulated all of those. Suffice to say that Covid is being treated differently than the flu. Some may disagree with that approach. Unless they work for the CDC or are themselves credible medical personnel, I’d err on the side of caution. Get tested and follow your employers protocol. If this was a coworker who you later learned you’d contracted it from, your perspective might be different.
Guys. In the heat of a feverish covid moment I posted this with little to no clarity. Let me clarify.
1. I had covid before. This is absolutely it and a false negative
2. My employer is annoyed I’m staying home and wanted proof of a positive test (because they wanted me to come in with a 102 fever and no taste or smell)
3. I fully will be staying home and quarantining as I have ALL symptoms but not a positive test.
Also the purpose of this post was to see if other employers were being so ridiculous about covid and demanding proof of a positive test / not wanting people to stay home when sick

I wouldn’t think that much into it.

OP said they disclosed they had covid symptoms.

The questioning sounds more like the need for contact tracing and exposure to other co-workers if you are working in-person...

You don't need to provide employee tests results to prove eligibility. In point of fact, this would be a hippa violation.
Take 49 days off to think about your response
50 sick days a year??? You could take 1 sick day a week nearly every week for the whole year? That’s doesn’t sound right.

It's not the most common thing. But I've seen stuff like this before.

You don’t need to tell them that . Just say you’re sick. They have no right to know your medical report. You don’t have to disclose. Just push back
You could be sick and not have COVID, but you’re still sick and no one one should have to work if they’re sick.

Per Hipaa, it’s none of their damn business
Why would an attorney (or anyone, really) not know this - or at least look it up? 🤔
Could be basic Flu.

Indeed. You’re welcome.
