Product marketing covers a broad range of skills and different companies and roles within the team can play to different strengths.
Here’s a list (2nd tab)

I’d focus on identifying what 2-3 skills are most important to you and try and get as many projects that give you talking points accordingly
Some examples
- market research. Show how you can identify keywords and metrics attached them and incorporate into campaign messaging and provide insights for copy writers. More broadly how to analyse market opportunities, trends, etc
- enablement. Helping identify features/benefits of product to highlight in campaign messaging. What trends and competition activity is relevant to know about by broader team. How do you translate SEO expertise/knowledge to leaders and clients in compelling and actionable ways
Etc
Etc
Once you have your story and focus, the next step is to find a product marketing team that aligns and type of product you find interesting! Good luck.
I love that document. Been using it for years. Still relevant and great for working out what my reports are interested in developing their skills in. Let’s us develop a plan accordingly and clear structure. Also helps cut through when interviewing. I want to do 3 skills and have X experiences in them. If not relevant for role then ask for advice. If it is then you’ve communicated more clearly than your competition and goal is to build a plan so you stay ahead of them too
i would say ask to work on a project. i lead a product marketing team, and i hired an seo specialist to help infuse seo strategy into our digital/social content marketing
I guess I should have added. I work at an agency, so we don't have a product marketing team. I am looking to make a shift to an in-house product marketer and would love any advice to get my foot in the door at a new company.
That's interesting
