*I initially did Plaintiff's side work in my practice area for the first couple of years of my practice but would like to return to the same area but on the defense side. I now do insurance defense.

Which is a higher priority - switching firms or having kids? Is it better to join a new firm and take leave shortly after arriving? Or stick with the current firm (but it sounds like you want to leave)? It might not help chances at partnership if that’s what you’re goal, but I’d imagine it’s hard for the firm to fire you without teeing up a lawsuit. Maybe start looking and, when you have the chance, ask about work-life balance. I’m at a firm where a number of young partners and senior associates have had kids but that may be atypical and I’m not sure if any were laterals.

Story time. About a year ago I wanted to have my 2nd child and am approaching 40 so felt some urgency. I was also approaching the 1st year that I could be eligible for partner and figured being on maternity leave and having lower productivity due to being pregnant would likely jeopardize that. I concluded that I could get over not making partner (or making it a year later) but couldn't get over regret from not having as many kids as I wanted. So I decided to get pregnant and do my best at work and we will see where it goes. I'm currently on mat leave and partnership decisions are made a few months after I return so we'll see. Ultimately you're at a fork in the road and it's not necessarily one or the other but you have to decide which one is most important to you and go with that while still making a reasonable push for #2. FWIW I'm married but husband is SAHD so my career is our financial future.

FSA and HSA question. I'm currently on PPO healthcare plan as we are expecting a baby in April. We've maxed out our FSA at 2850. Can I switch to HDHP because of the baby being a life event, and then contribute 8/12 of the HSA max for the year too? Is there any change to my FSA if I do that (which will already be depleted by then)?

Hi all. Posted this in a different bowl and not getting any replies. Hoping you all can help. What benefits are smaller companies (under 50 employees) offering? How much pto? How big of a contribution to health, dental? Any spousal or dependent coverage? Any other less common benefits? Basically looking for ways to remain competitive to the degree possible with larger employers. Thanks!

As an immigrant, I’m grateful for the opportunities afforded to me since moving to the USA. But, I must say, it still doesn’t feel like home after a decade. I still cannot wrap my mind around the gun culture, lack of universal healthcare and emphasis on education (critical thinking). I’m planning to leave in the coming year or so. COVID really made me realize that life is indeed short.

Today I called CPS on my friend's loser bf. I acted mad with her at "whoever made the call in" but I'm so fucking glad they took that kid away. That dickwad was beating the shit out of both of them. Now I just have to keep trying to get her away.

Do you guys ever just tell recruiters that the process is taking too long and withdraw your application? This guy made contact with me 2 weeks ago, said he’d get an interview set up with internal HR, then ghosted me, then appeared out of nowhere and told me I had a call with internal HR the next. There’s 4 more steps after this. It’s just too much. I know that’s a normal timeline, but the point is it just takes too long now.
