I have a $60k sign on bonus coming in, after tax around $42k. I’ve never had this amount of money before and want to spend it wisely and maybe invest… what would you recommend? I was thinking of buying a home but the buying market is so bad right now in my city (Dallas, TX)… any and all recommendations welcome!

Have you already maxed out your Roth IRA? If not, put 6k for 2021 and 6k for 2022. The rest (minus emergency fund), I'd put into a brokerage account invested into VTI + VXUS. If you're set on buying a home in 2-3 years then I wouldn't invest it.

Very very tough spot I tell ya!

Here’s what I do with my annual bonus: 30% into an after-tax brokerage account that invests in boring etfs, 30% in kids 529s, 30% in cash and 10% “fun money” to blow on whatever I want as a reward for working my ass off all year. This year I’ve chosen to dollar cost average vs lump sum into my investments.

What job is this where you got a 60k sign on bonus?

Would also like to hear what role this is for!

I’d buy a Rolex (max 8k) and put the rest in VOO

I might be crazy but 42k seems high for the net on a 60k bonus

Just did this for my own bonus this year and you are correct.

Buy 1 BTC.

1. Set aside a small, defined amount for fun money. $2k-$3k so that you aren't tempted to go above and beyond
2. Put the money into a mutual fund while decide if you want to buy a house or make another big purchase. Fees to pull it out are small and it will earn money while you think
3. Put the remainder of the money into index funds and let it go

Assuming your company allows it and it does not mess up your company match, you can consider allocating as big a chunk of this bonus as required to meet your 401K max contribution of 20500 for the year. This will free up the 401K part of your remaining paychecks for the rest of the year. I hope your 401K is also invested in line with your investment goals in the right instruments.

The amount left from the bonus after allocating the amount required to hit 20500 in 401K contributions can be invested in VTI or equivalents.

The additional amount freed up in subsequent paychecks can also be invested likewise.

Now let's talk about the risk of investing now when a house purchase is on the horizon. If you are pretty sure you are going to buy a house in 2-3 years, will you be able to withstand a 30% drop in your investments and still buy the house? Or can you defer the buying the house at that point, in case of a 30% drop, until the market recovers?

If not, you should keep the money in less risky investment avenues which will obviously come with much lower and even negligible returns.

One option is to put at least 10K into ibonds which will lock up the cash for a year but give better returns than HYSA. You can bump this up to 15K as well, depending on how much of a tax refund you are expecting from 2021 tax filing.

In this market it's honestly probably better to be DCAing into index funds over the year and maybe 10% of the funds into crypto.

If you want a home that badly... then prioritize being ready to hop on an offer once you find something by having your pre-approvals all ready to go.

Also don't buy "too much" house (too expensive for what you actually need). It's a much better position to have more of your net worth in stock from a return and liquidity perspective, unless the home is cashing flowing for you as well.

I'm in the hunt for a home myself. Not looking to spend more than 350K all in.

I’m honestly baffled by the amount of people on this post that are part of the working class but cannot fundamentally read. Obviously, ACN is not the company I got a $60k sign on bonus from, ACN is my current company and I’m making my exit. Thank Use your heads!

Ok, so I have a couple of offers, one kind of lackluster, for the County. The other is for a credit union-I left credit unions a few years ago to join a FinTech supporting credit unions)
I was laid off last month and have had a flurry of interviews…this credit union offer is my favorite so far, I do have another offer I’m waiting for from another tech company which has a much higher salary range, but nothing is written in stone.
Should I counter? The offer is $95k for a project manager.

Living in Chicago with SO. We both love our apt. a ton and has been a great experience. We both just started our first full time jobs. But I’ve been thinking a lot about the cost/benefit to finding a duplex/triplex and house hacking. I am paying $1050/mo. if you total rent, utilities and parking. To me it seems like house hacking I could cut my living expense very close to 0 if I do it right. To me it seems like a great move if I can handle the extra effort that comes with it? Newbie here! I work for a non-profit. Which some of you know makes me the marketing department, creative team, PR rep, and so much more. I am very UNDER PAID. I’ve know this for a while but stuck it out because I am getting great experience, my co-workers are wonderful people, and most recently, the board of directors have decided to increase everyone’s pay…
My next evaluation (very soon) will reveal what they have decided. I was not asked what I think I should be paid. What should I be paid?
