I have a brand new person on my team- she is totally new to the field, has recently returned to the workforce (solo mom of 3 teens), is very smart. I knew when I hired her that I’d have to lean in to get her to where she needed to be. She has a ton of potential but lacks experience in a professional setting. I need to help her level up her written communication skills. Any suggestions on books, resources, strategies? She is learning by doing and takes feedback but I want more supports for her.

Also, cc or bcc her on emails as much as possible so she can see how you speak to people. And give her the chance to draft responses, send them to you to review before sending. That will give her confidence too. But if she’s smart, eager she’ll catch on quickly. (I’ve worked with younger colleagues that send the most cringeworthy emails and love some of these other resources people have suggested. I’ll have to check them out.)

I love that you are taking the time to support and train this employee.
Women, we have to stick together and uplift one another and stop bringing each other down. I was at a company that the women were very competitive and brought other women down, it was a toxic environment.
Kudos to you! 🙌🏽

Thank you. I want so badly for her to succeed. It is hard to rejoin the workforce after decades away, in a vastly different field, as a POC in a fairly conservative white male dominated space. Our team is more casual in our day-to-day, but when we communicate out, we all have to switch tone to be more “formal”. Some of it is just learning the jargon and buzz words, but there is a tone and style that is expected. She said she feels a bit “country” compared to everyone else and she’s self conscious about it. She has identified goals around communicating & writing. I’m sure she will get there.

I second this to the highest degree. The pro version also has mood and tone help. Also courses on Udemy I have found helpful including Google or 365 classes depending on which you use.

Googled professional writing courses, there’s one on Coursera that targets how to write professional emails and memos.

LinkedIn Learning has a whole bunch of great classes. Some of those might be applicable.

like

Create a learning path for her to follow in Excel, Word, PowerPoint, or other doc type. Segment training into weeks (week 1, week 2, etc.). Try to add a good mix of articles, videos, and maybe create your own assignments that pertain to her job for you to provide constructive feedback on. There are free courses out there to help with this, so maybe throw at least one into the mix. Set a regular weekly meeting for 30 minutes to discuss her progress; it's also a good opportunity to check in to ask how she's feeling in her role, and how else you/the company could be more supportive.

I have created paths for many topics over the years, and can say there are better results when the one learning is invested by being able to discuss progression and anywhere they feel they're stumbling.

Good on you for providing support and seeing her potential. Design career development plan with her on what she needs and allow her as well to do some research or where some courses she would be interested in pursuing and attending. Everyone has a different learning style. College and Universities have continuing studies designed for adult learning and able to provide extra support.

You sound like an awesome leader. You should recommend she look up Barbara Minto's Pyramid Principle — It's like the foundation of modern executive comms — Situation, Complication, Question, and Answer.

Thank you! I’ll check this out.

I appreciate everyone offering suggestions and resources. I talked to my boss and she gave me budget for external resources needed (and the time) to create a learning path, identify additional resources, and get her connected to mentors. We also identified some other people with similar needs so we can offer this to those folks as well. It was so empowering to walk in with a plan and get a green light to proceed within minutes. Thank you all!!

Take her under her wing and support her with kindness and love . Plus validation goes a long way. When she does a good job , let her know . She will shine under your mentorship and support . We all got to where we are because someone believed in our potential. She will appreciate that and the energy you give will come back ten fold !

Also a mentor outside of you as her direct supervisor would be very helpful as she adjusts, learns and grows. Or pair her up with someone that compliments her skills, say perhaps someone long tenured and respected in the company and industry.

I like this too. I am going to reach out to a few folks internally and try to get her paired up.

Firstly and most importantly, I think that you are a rockstar and I am so impressed/jealous and hope one day to encounter/be a manager like you. Secondly, as a writer, want to help out if I can- do you mind clarifying the areas you’re seeking improvement? In other words, where do written communication skills come into play in the position?

likehelpful

Sure!
1. Her phrasing is casual or informal and can come across as unpolished. We are not a super formal team/company in chat but emails and deliverables are held to a higher standard.
2. She’s more verbose, colorful and descriptive than needed. I like some personality and voice in the writing, but we are communicating research findings and recommendations and need to be precise and efficient (almost clinical). Her message is getting lost in the volume of words.
3. There are grammar quirks and punctuation inconsistencies (possibly related to issue #1).

This makes my heart so happy! I'm also a big fan of self-assessment to bring awareness to the fact that she's not starting from scratch. She probably has some great communication strategies (she's a mom of teenagers after all) that can be refined to be "more professional."

I would do a quick exercise between the two of you by outlining strengths and areas of improvement to guide your focus on which courses, trainings, books, etc. to enroll in/read based on her learning style. It's a strategic and customized approach, plus it gets you aligned on how to move forward/tracking process and growth. So excited for you both!

Could you make another post/comment to keep us in the loop with how you all proceed/progress? I think this would be an awesome opportunity to learn from your experience as well.

Also, LinkedIn Learning has some good programs in this area.

Have her use Grammarly for everything. She will start noticing on her own when she makes mistakes and it has great suggestions to get you out of using repeat wording and common phrases. I have everyone on my team using this for English and a similar tool for Spanish.

What you should do when dealing with a very toxic worker that keep on sending passive aggressive messages to you as well as in group chat and email.
Things like when you answer his question he respond: I know that
Or when he keeps on saying my change requests were just minor in group meeting but actually not.
And keep on saying how hard he works when he clearly wasn’t and already underperformed compared to an intern level.

How to not let this toxic co-worker not poison me any further?

My bf works in one of the teams we're auditing. It's an extremely high visibility client, so I don't want to risk telling someone. It would absolutely be a career-limiting move to get kicked (cont.)

Been for a company for over 2years. The executive team is very much a boy's club. There are a few women in management roles but zero ethnicity diversity there. I raised my concern to HR in feb. And they are just now deciding to do something about it. They want me (white female) to put together a diversity committee. Any suggestions on how to go about it? How to attract volunteers to the committee? I want to make sure I get the right people involved in this, to push for changes.
