Sounds like they are trying to catch a lie/obfuscation. Depending on the circumstances of your departure, it may not be an issue. I know folks who were "counseled out" of biglaw positions and told very clearly that refence calls were welcome and responses would be positive. Same happened when a friend left a plaintiff's firm because they didn't work well with the partner who hired them. Firms often want you to speak well of them down the road. As long as you're not actually lying and there isn't significant bad blood with the former job, I wouldn't expect an issue.

Thanks for the feedback. There’s a severance agreement and no bad blood at all with the exception of 1-2 partners. Several references still there. Just trying to gauge how I should be reacting now.

I see a lot of people post about long term relationships. My wife and I are celebrating our 35th wedding anniversary today. We've been poor, house poor, poor again, middle class, upper middle class and now well to do. We've had many of the problems you would expect over time, multiple careers, lived in 8 states, and raised two children. It is hard, wonderful, worthwhile and doable. I hope everyone here gets as lucky as we have been.
