YES! I have one this year! I also had one about 9 years ago. Do you have any counselors at your school or anyone who can run small groups? At my old school she qualified for counseling and worked with the counselor once a week to build up her confidence to speak out loud. After a few months they invited me to come play board games with them and she started speaking to me. Eventually she felt comfortable to talk to me and a few students in the classroom one on one or in small groups.
With the one I have now we just got her started with our unconditional learning coach organizing a small group of girls that my selective mute chose as girls she wanted included in their Friday game time. Their first game group was this past Friday. Ultimately I’ll get to join in too, when she’s ready to invite me. In the meantime, we’ve been communicating via a notebook that she leaves on her desk at the end of the day and I respond in the morning. I ask her what things she needs help with in Math, does she like the books I read aloud, does she have any questions for me...stuff like that. Hope this helps!
Yes! It has been 13 years ago, and he was a kindergarten student. The mom kept telling me how much he would talk. So I sent a tape recorder home. They decided to have him read his favorite book to me the first week. Then he would bring the tape recorder back and I would listen with him there. He would bring the books in and slowly whispered parts to me as the tape played. Then over time he would talk more and more to me on the tape recorder. By the end of the year he would talk some with out the recorder. He graduated last year and even spoke to me. His mom told me, his senior year, how he would get told to be quiet in class, she never thought she would hear those words!
I had one in my kindergarten classroom last year. I'd hear her talk quietly every once in a great while. I saw her with her mom at the grocery store, and she was talking her ear off. It blew my mind.
I dead two student teaching. One was just doing it out of defiance and attention. The other was legitimately diagnosed. We found that they were comfortable talking quietly to one specific student. We would sit them near each other. Their friend would communicate for them if they needed anything. Overall, selective mutism has not been my biggest issue, as long as it has been diagnosed.
