I have a family member that started a company. Said company reached out to my sister asking for an interview presumably not knowing she was related to the founder. She is at a cross roads - it’s a good opportunity and she would never see said family member but she is worried people might think nepotism as they have the same last name. Also she is unemployed so she needs a job. Would you take the interview?

Almost everyone who complains about nepotism does so because they’re not the beneficiary and would gladly accept nepotistic help if it benefitted them. Standing on your moral high horse doesn’t pay the bills.

Had a similar situation with my wife's family. She simply didn't mention she was related to the CEO at any point. Worked there for years and no one ever suspected they were uncle/niece. Different last names though.

like

I'd go for it.

Even if it's a concern, I would still interview. Interviewing doesn't mean she's accepting a job

1. Yes 2. Is the last name super unique? If it’s Smith, I doubt anyone would even consider that.

like

It’s unique

Reach out to the founder, and/or someone close in your family who can advise or get in touch with founder. It's going to be seen as nepotism anyway, at least this way you're being proactive. Tell them the recruiter reached out, that you'd like to interview for the position anyway, ask for permission, and possibly request that said founder or relatives avoid any bias in the process.

It would be fine as long as she doesn't bring up the last name connection and there isn't an employment based green card angle to it.

How is this even a question? How the hell do you think Bush Jr became president?

Who cares? That's part of the point of creating a business. Lol

I’ve had countless interviews at a few agencies, all with 4-5 interviews taking months at a time to continue to receive the email “we went with another candidate but everyone loved your experience and thought you’d be great”. I feel so down right now, and I keep thinking it’s me. How do you stop feeling so discouraged? I’m still at my current company/role, I’m just not happy at all so looking to find something/someplace new.

Interviewing for a great position in industry (tech). They have equity comp & great benefits. Spoke to their HR, then interviewed with 2 people in the tax department and am getting scheduled for a next round of interviews. The only problem is: the office is about 1 hr from my house (I own). They said repeatedly that they want someone who will be in the office 5 days a week. I would actually move but can’t rent out my place now due to some repairs going on that will take 4-5 months. Thoughts?

Anyone else feel like their actual work is very disconnected from their paycheck? If I do a great job and create a ton of value for the client I’ll get a maximum of a 15% TC increase YOY (much less due to covid). Similarly if I do the absolute minimum it’s really hard to be fired since I’m in a hot market and they can’t decrease my TC without cutting my base pay (which I’m 99% sure they won’t do). And my raise/bonus won’t even necessarily be indicative of my performance anyways.
