I have a final interview with another firm. Was told the only open question is about whether I’d come in as Senior Consultant/ Associate or Manager. How should I present my case for manager? Quite frankly, I’d be fine with coming in as SC, but the difference in compensation is too significant to not aim for M.

Consider your options holistically and not solely based on comp. You could totally knock it out of the park as a SC but fail miserably as a manager if you are not ready especially without network and potentially a steep learning curve for new firm’s processes

Thanks! That’s exactly what I’m concerned about. At the same time, I’d feel stupid for opting for the lower rank when I have the chance to aim for M. Any way to get the best of both worlds, i.e. responsibility (and comp) of a manager but with a stronger safety net in case I underperform?

I had the same problem about a year back, they didn't know whether to hire me as a Consultant or Senior Consultant (I come from industry without a ton of exp). I was fine with going in at a lower level but did get compensated at the SC level. I got promoted not too long after and everyone was extremely supportive of it once they saw my work. You usually won't max out a pay band before jumping to the next. Just make sure you negotiate hard upfront before you accept the offer and take the lower level (less responsibilities anyway).

Some of the pay bands will overlap, and so it was more of a case where I was really high on the C band but lower on the SC band. When I did get my promo, I got bumped up to the middle of the SC band though. Also had a really nice bonus at year end for performing well. It's actually logical - my firm is more conservative and wants to make sure you're staffed at the appropriate level so that you're set up for success. I've seen scenarios where managers just completely bomb it and end up quitting altogether. I like a firm that looks out for me in that way. At the end of the day, I care a lot more about the money and success of a project than job title.

Find out when the promotion cycle is. If they promote in the summer, coming in as an SC now, killing it, then getting quickly promoted would look great. If it’s not until next December, then maybe push harder for the title knowing you’ll have longer to acclimate.

I have been an adjuster for almost 5 years, although I have loved almost all of my time adjusting and find it fun, in a sense, I am so ready to take my skills into underwriting. Does anyone have any tips for transitioning from adjusting to underwriting? I know this will sound cliche but I find myself to be very passionate about insurance and I do well when interviewed, but it is difficult to get a response for underwriting applications because they all “require” underwriting experience.
