I have a good friend in Seattle who wants to break in to Big Law. He has about 6 years of experience doing mostly family law at small firms and went to an unranked law school. Any advice?

He will need to be ok with starting as a first year and he will need to “talk” his way around the family law. He will pretty much need to be really likable. It’s going to be VERY hard and he will need to be willing to do any area of law where there is a need. I have a friend who started as a staff/contract attorney and is now an equity partner, but she could talk a dog off a meat truck. But it can be done.

I did it after nearly 2 years in family law. You need rock solid referrals/connections, the willingness to drop several class years and the gift of gab.

It’s not a super large market for big law. I should have more concrete advice; I’d be prepared for a lot of disappointment.

I would look for a boutique that reps deep pockets for this. Since family law is not a branch in big law as far as I know and let’s face it the only reason to go into big law is $

I agree. Maybe go to a boutique creditors’ rights firm or financial services route first, spend a few years and become a good litigator and make some connections. Two things can happen: you can either network your way up to BigLaw or stay with the boutique long enough to become partner. Just my own thoughts.
