So I've had 2 hiring managers and several recruiters from Amazon reach out to me about applying for some open positions with the company (android). I completed the coding assessment and now they want me to go through a round of 5 hour interviews next week. Is there a good chance I'll be hired if engineering managers are reaching out to me? I'm really not sure how badly I want to work for them and I don't want to be laid off months after being hired on. Anyone know what Amazon hiring is like?
Name and shame the firms doing stealth lay-offs.

The economy is in for some shit for the foreseeable future. I'd stick with the stable job.
If they bring you in now, they should know the risks. It’s another thing if they brought you in January 2020.
The true question is what's the delta in salaries and how much could you get ahead in the new job over the next 6 months or so even if you were eventually laid off. Going from a $70k/yr government gig to a $300k firm job may be more than worth it even if you're laid off 9 months from now.
How did they handle things in 2008?

Dont go. I worked on a hall of laterals in 2008 that got canned 1 by 1 as partners circled the wagons with trusted associates who had worked there longer. Same laterals were _begged_ to join months before.

Might you offer them the opportunity to defer until they are back to the office? Assuming they are now WFH.
they’re not going to hire you as a midlevel now and then lay you right off. if they hire you they have a good sense they have the work to keep you on. and they’ll be axing the expensive senior associates first

Put it in your contract to be certain!
I’ve seen peers make similar transitions. They negotiated guaranteed 1-2 year contracts for that purpose.
I’m sure the firm has a business plan when they endeavored to hire a new attorney.
