I read this post and was instantly turned off, Silas Marner. Laugh it off if you will, but it's stealing, and so unnecessary in your case. From experience, most people who are TIGHTWADS have other character flaws, where their miserly ways bleed into their personal relationships in more ways than one. I know from experience being raised by a wealthy parent who got HIGH shopping at Goodwill and the Salvation Army Thrift Stores - outlets meant for people truly in need. Some people need to be frugal, but being "cheap" is something different all together.
A character flaw? Suppose a wonderful person wrote this. What else could be going on? Could they be afraid of losing it all and careful at every turn? Maybe they find excess spending upsetting? Maybe it’s cultural and a parents voice sounds in their head to be thrifty. Don’t judge.
I wonder why minimum wage is so low. Probably has nothing to do with wealthy people hoarding. Sure, ketchup packets are minor but it’s the mindset. The mindset that says “I have a lot more than 99% of people in this world but I deserve to take more.”
Y’all will never be happy because you are never satisfied. This idea that being cheap is somehow an admirable trait is so incredibly toxic. Instead, you should be flaunting how you save money by consuming less goods. Not by finding ways to consume more goods for free at the expense of the availability of goods to others.
Just my two cents.
Customer theft, employee theft and frivolous lawsuits (not saying there are not legit lawsuits… referring to the frivolous ones), are the number one drivers of excess cost. And companies still need to perform financially and answers to shareholders. I do think that the minimum wage is too low, however compensation should be based on skills for the job, roles and responsibilities. Raising wages means the cost of goods will go up as no company will ever take a hit in profits to make up for wage increase. Should a fast food restaurant employees with no secondary education really make $15 or more an hour when a new college grad with a mountain of educational debt, working at a corporation, not subject to hourly minimum wage laws, might make about the same?….
Minimum wage jobs were not intended to support families. Yes, the wage should increase to account for inflation, but we should look for ways to support people to move up and beyond minimum wage jobs, not be stuck and solely dependent on them.
650k and I cut the toothpaste tube and get an extra 5-7 uses out of the inside
@pwc11: beauty products/ skin cremes are worth hundreds of dollars. Toothpaste = $2.
It is not even worth my time to grab the scissors and cut the tube...
I have a household income of 475k and will clear my cart and log off if I don’t qualify for free shipping.

For $2-3 I can have ketchup from a bottle, not have messy packets everywhere, lower package waste, and not eat at mcdonalds.
Money well spent!

Ketchup is generally trash. 25% of it is sugar.
I take all the forks, napkins, etc. from Chipotle as well lmao
Take the smoked Tabasco sauce too… good stuff!
Rich people don't stay rich by spending needlessly.
I don’t think this meets the definition of spending needlessly lol

I have a healthy income for a single guy. Here are my habits:
1.) I shop wal-mart, Aldi, and Dollar stores almost exclusively.
2.) I take napkins, ketchup, mayo, mustard packets from supermarkets and fast food joints
3.) I take any extra toilet paper, shampoo, soap from hotels that I can get my hands on. Once, I was in a courtyard marriott for 3 weeks for work, and ended up coming home with half my suitcase full of toilet paper. That stuff is expensive now.
Aldi has gotten really good, more expensive than it used to be, but better produce and such.
$500k here and I still split first dates
It goes both ways. EY20 you seem like a keeper - lucky who ypu end up with

I open up body wash/ shampoo bottles when they're empty, pour some water in it to fully finish it 🤗
Shake and bake instead of waiting 😜

I have a household income of 400k and I am the entire household. I just wanted to brag, I'm not cheap. 😂

I get my lunch/dinner by walking past restaurants and picking leftovers from plates of people who finished and left. Haven’t paid for food in three years.
If you’re serious about doing this, it’s disgusting and makes me wonder if you went through something in your childhood to make you think this is OK.

$820k HH income and we just said “let’s not shop at Whole Foods in august. We have to save a bit more before the holidays”

Don’t go to Walmart, your employer is tracking you
I am super frugal even though I myself make close to what the OP household does. I have a cheap car, fill up at Costco and am always looking for a a deal. I was was raised this way given my parents didn’t have money so it’s engrained in me.

We have Sam's Club and Costco membership. I buy somethings from SC that are cheaper. Used to swear by Costco/SC gas but now buy at Shell. T-mobile gives me 10c off a gallon weekly

Everybody in this thread salivating at the opportunity to flex their household income when it's not even necessary for a response to the OP.
This! I didn’t post mine because I don’t understand the relevance or importance and was called a secretive clown…😂

I must say I enjoyed reading this thread much more than any of the recent covid ones.
There’s a difference between cheap and smart. My HHI is about 400 and we spend where we see the value in spending. Where we don’t, we conserve - we buy our groceries across Amazon, Costco and a local low cost grocery based on where it’s cheaper. We don’t have nice cars. We don’t buy expensive clothes or accessories. We take public transit if it’s an option. We cook our own food. Etc.
BUT we spend on travel, a fine dining experience now and then, nights out with friends and housing that’s convenient to work and with good schools.
Ewww, McDonald’s? Seriously? I am going to call out anyone who eats that 🗑
“No excuse to eat at McDonald’s” 😂
That $3 for ketchup invested and compounded over a work lifetime (40 years) is upwards of $45. When you’re 80 you could buy an entire McDonlads meal!
I save and reuse zip lock bags, saran wrap unfinished sodas so they don't go flat rather than just opening a new one later, save unused condiments and napkins to use at home, use free grocery plastic bags for trash bags instead of buying trash bags, bring empty bottles to my mom's to refill from her Costco size laundry detergent or dish soap, and root through things siblings/parents are ready to donate or trash. I make $100k salary but have like $10MM in trust which also earns income.
I use the reusable plastic bags (ziploc competitor), but for the environment
