Need Your HR Expertise
I’m job hunting in Los Angeles, looking at a variety of titles (HRBP, Sr. HRBP, Manager, Sr. Manager, Director). I have 8 YOE and my SHRM-SCP. I reached my report limit on payscale.com, so I used a variety of other sites to price the roles (BLS, salary.com, Glassdoor, LinkedIn, Robert Half). The problem I’m having is the huge inconsistencies between sources (there are $40k differences between some of the identified medians). (Continued…)
Ask them questions during the call or ask them to take over a portion of the call re: their own operations beforehand.
First, is bi-weekly necessary, or could you scale back to monthly? Engagement could be down because there's simply not enough to talk about. Second, have you chosen a day/time that is fair for all team members? If they are globally dispersed, some may be logging on at an off hour, and therefore simply not in the mood to participate. And third, have you thought about incorporating something non-business related into each call? I have a weekly call where we do an ice breaker question to open. Each week it's different - could be "tell us one thing about yourself that others might not know" or "share one thing you've learned in the past 7 days" (I'm sure you can find a ton of ideas online). I find this helps to make people a little more at ease and comfortable with each other, which makes them more likely to participate. Good luck!
Flip the agenda order: updates and business changes are now the last thing you talk about in the meeting. Questions at the end are now questions at the beginning. Let them know in advance that you'll be asking for an overview of what they worked on in the past week, including any accomplishments and challenges. Ask if they could change one thing about their week, day-to-day, or how the company does things, what would it be? Be genuinely curious about their insights and, once you've got them, do all you can to meet them where they're at in terms of needs. With that investment, they should become more talkative in these meetiings.
