We had a big meeting and they only had 50% of the work done and didn’t come in to work. No call no slack nothing until 30 min before the meeting. I was able to get their files and grab some other ADs to help out and finish it in time but I’m livid. I’ve become their project manager/ mother and feel stressed/ taken advantage of. Do I talk to them and give them another shot or ask for a new partner? I don’t want them dragging me down when I’m trying to work on bigger, better projects and the CDs think we can’t even finish the smallest task.
Have had my fair share of art directors... they either are in it to be successful or to cruise by.
Either way, you won’t change their mind, no matter how hard you try. I’ve done Tony Robbins like speeches etc.
If you have the luxury of getting a new partner, I’d do it. Sounds like this one ain’t making the cut.
You probably still have to “talk” to them just to cover your ass. Your boss will probably ask if you talked to them... Though i think a good CD will value your honesty if you tell then straight up what’s going on like you did on here... good luck
Copy is always done on time. Comps never are. 🤷🏼♂️
Talk to them first about the problem you never know they could have some serious life issues keeping them from executing at the quality of their ability, they could not be as passionate about the work as you or they could just be plumb lazy. The only way you’ll find out is to pull them aside and have a conversation. They may open up to you. Maybe start the conversation with hey you’re a great designer and I really think we develop strong concepts together; however, I think our ideas could be visually stronger if you have more time to execute before the deadline. For example we had a really big meeting last week and (state what happened) there are other times this has taken place as well (state those times) is their something going on we should talk about? Because I really think you’re a great designer and want to continue working with you blah blah blah.
Hope this helps and things go well. Wish you the best on your journey to great work.
Was there any discussion after he came in? I mean if you want to try to handle it yourself first tell him how shitty he's being. But otherwise if this is the way he is, it's doubtful he will change
I had a partner like that once. He was a fun, lovable guy but he had poor time management skills. The other CDs knew it. Finally, an ECD asked me to join his team, without a partner and I jumped at the chance. I felt bad about leaving my current partner but I had to get out. Shortly afterwards he left the agency. He invited me to one of his parties a year later and we had a great laugh. He even made a joke about me abandoning him.
In hindsight, I wish I had confronted him in a nice way. I wish I had tried to work it out and not just jumped ship.
Talk to him. You owe him that. If the tables were turned and you were tanking your team, would you want to be told so you could have a chance to correct it?
CW4 completely agree. In my experience, if someone with a good reputation is tanking suddenly, it’s usually because they have some difficult personal situation going on which they are trying to compartmentalize, i.e. going through the beginnings of a divorce, a family member addiction, etc. I agree with the idea of approaching them with a little understanding and seeing where it goes from there.
