I have a PhD on a pretty rare subject, so I'm invaluable to my company. I want to quit and join another company, but I feel guilty because I know it would delay our project for months to find someone to replace me. Should I care?

Would they show you the same amount of professionalism you are showing them if the roles were reversed?

Always remember you need to do what's best for YOU, as long as you do it Professionally you should not feel guilty in the slightest for doing what's best for you.

Find your new gig first. Lock it in. Then work on a mutually agreeable transition timeline for your current employer and let your new employer know as well. If you’re not moving into a competing space, I’ve even offered to help screen new candidates for former employers.

Sure, at the end of the day, look out for yourself and it’s survival of the fittest. But taking the high road is always a better path. You don’t have to leave someone hanging unless it’s contractually written that you can’t.

I would feel guilty too but I think it's important to remember that you need to put yourself first. Making the best move for your career is more important than satisfying your current employer.

Why? Why would you care?

The company may be unkind, cold and ruthless, but the world is small and the people within it will remember whether you slammed the door on them.

When you run into those people again years later, it will matter. I can’t tell you how many times old contacts have resurfaced in a random LinkedIn chat to tell me they got a call asking about me, usually while I was going through an interview process.

smart

If you feel on the fence about it, but give a longer notice period.

Do I take a job at a more boring company that’s a 41% pay increase and comes with 1% equity?

Current company: a fun and exciting fintech startup that’s about to raise a Seed/Series A. Possible to be promoted in the next year with a pay bump (still likely not as much as the job offer)

Potential company: A marketplace that sells used phones online and has been profitable for 5+ years.

I remember when I first started working on my thesis project. My adviser asked me to get some funding for it, but he didn't give me any advice about how to do that. He just told me that if I wanted money for my project, I'd have to go through some kind of committee process and submit an application for funding from them. Sure enough, after weeks of writing applications and waiting around for responses from the committee members (who were always too busy), I eventually got approved for funding!

I’ve been in strategy (social and Comms) for 8 years — with each move up, I feel myself getting farther and farther away from the creative process, which is my favorite part of my job.

What roles are there that straddle strategy/creative? Is there a way to transition to a creative position — and what does that look like? From everything I’ve seen, it seems like I would have to start over at entry level Copywriter and a lateral move to a comparable Creative position is non-existent?

Hi all, was hoping for clarity on offers from FANG/Tier 2 tech I received recently. Base pay is still within range of 130-150K, but equity components have dropped dramatically. For reference, for similar positions, I was receiving grants of 150K - 200K over 4 years for data analyst positions (4-5 YOE) in Aug’21-Feb’22. For personal reasons, I did not accept these offers. Now the equity grants are coming in like 50-70K over 4 years. Is this market wide for non SWE/PM roles due to stock market?

Okay I have a manager who has a diamond ring - ENGAGEMENT RING - that they wear on their right hand as just a regular ring, and it’s from a past breakup. And they aren’t even a little ashamed of it, as they said that it’s just a nice item, why not make it theirs? And I thought, they make so much money, can’t they just buy a new one for themselves? I found it interesting so I wanted to see how everyone else feels about it: Do you keep gifts from exes? I also honestly have never thought it was a big deal because I don’t associate the gift to the person, they’re just things I love, but then this felt weird. How do you feel about it?
