I am a Para in SPED, the powers that be just don't get it. We work our tails off, no breaks, just lunch. I am EXHAUSTED when I get off work
Yes, I know. I used to be in HR.
That was my point of the question. I had my observation and was supposed to meet with my evaluator, but we couldn’t find any time because of my schedule. We finally decided after school. So thought this would be a good time to mention the caseload and support needed. But was just passed over as part of special education. Will meet with school board on Friday.
CONDITION NORMAL. Yet administrators and educators are puzzled as to why there is a shortage of special education teachers and the attrition rate in California is 5 years or less.
We have recently faced the same issue. Only our admin is wonderful with support and helping with problem solving. We have 1 teacher 2 paras. 12 in class, 1 virtual. We have BEHAVIORS. One thing we did was make our class larger.(we have walls that can be removed) Our class is K-5. Our admin does normal walk throughs, helps with parent communication and fosters those relationships. If admin isn’t willing to help go further. Keep your head up.
Thank you. I am doing it for my kids. Despite the lack of support in the classroom, when they are with me they are making gains galore. Even have a mixed math, 1 second grade, 3 fourth grade and 2 fifth grade at the same time. Mixed disabilities, mostly processing delays, and we started doing arrays and working with a multiplication chart to get ready for testing. I love it, my second grader is right there using the tools and strategies with the big kids! Mom just cries when we talk. I’ve only had him since November and couldn’t add with regrouping, now he is flying. Wish the rest of my kids could make such gains. Proud of all!
At least you have 2 paras! I have one and she is only here half the day and also does recess duty. I will soon have 15 students to myself. It’s ridiculous. Grades K-5 too.
So sorry to hear. My first year same school, I had 17 and no para support. A month in I finally convinced the director I needed help. Again the lower el teacher had all the support. We held interviews and hired one and she went to the lower el teacher. Hello, we need someone to support my students, oh, well which one did you like? I thought great I finally got someone. A week later I ended up getting support for3 hours and the remaining 2.5 hours she was in middle school. Six years later same thing. Lower el has 5 para support and has 12 students while I have now 16 and 3 more evals coming and no extra help in sight.

In a socials skills class, the prompt was “Ask a peer what is their favorite drink.” Students said “Have a drink?” and “What do you drink?” 🤣
Unfortunately teaching multiple grade levels/ multiple subjects at one time is just part of the job. I have 4 paras to work with and a second teacher. Between the two of us we manage almost 40 students. Paras go in class and this semester the second teacher goes in some classes. But I have three class periods where I am teaching 4 different subjects to students at different levels and only have 1 para for 2 of those hours to help. It gets dicey but the kids learn the rhythm and you just so the best you can. My case load is also mixed ability so I have LD, BD/ED and ID. (small district) Oh grades 9-12.
If I had any support in my class during the day I would feel privileged. I’m not griping for me but the students who are not getting enough instruction support as I make the rounds.
I am happy for your students to have support along with your instruction.
