I have a residence in New York City for which the lease expires in October 2020, but have been living at my parents since mid March which is outside of NYC and intend to do so for the remainder of the year. Will I have to pay NYC income taxes this year?

Claiming residence is usually Half of the year + 1 day delineation for taxes. We have to put our charge codes to a local jurisdiction. My suggestion is that you start getting at least one piece of mail (bills, paystubs, etc) at your parents house so that you can have documentation when filing your taxes.

Thank you super helpful

First step; Call accounting and change your address so that it does not reflect your city address. This will immediately affect your paycheck and the taxes you pay.

You will most likely still have to pay NYC taxes as that is where your assigned office is located. They will come after your money regardless of where you currently live. You’ll have to document proof that you no longer live/work in NYC. Given the insane revenue shortfall expected for 2020 all state governments will be very aggressive collecting tax in 2021. Further, NY gives you credit for taxes paid to other states, but your tax bill at the end of the year will not decrease at all

I'm early in my career, managed to save $30K to invest, and want to get my hands dirty with a rental property without too much risk (e.g. no HML/flipping). It sounds like that's a tall order in the NY/CT area given the prices, not to mention whether I'd be able to get a mortgage on anything below $100K, but I figure I'll give it a shot anyway. Any advice on what you might do in my position? Am I being crazy with this idea?

Curious to know how much your student loans were when you graduated from your program, how much you’ve paid off so far, and your age. If you have any varying factors too, like kids, income range, etc. Just trying to see if I’m on track or slacking in life. I am 34 yo, i graduated with 95k in student loans, i currently have 85k left and i make 85k in come. I’m also a single mom with two kids. Just praying for 100% student loans forgiveness. Wishful thinking???

New to US, do you guys invest in the 401K plan?

Do you guys think mortgage rates will go up over the next 5 years?
I have the option of doing 3.65% for 5 years or 3.95% for 10 years. This is for commercial real estate. Should I go with lower 5 year rate or try to lock in the higher 10 year rate?

Is there a reason why we always focus on earned income tax rates as a means for generating tax revenue? Seems like instituting a minimum effective tax rate on corporate earnings or taxing capital gains as ordinary income would yield more tax revenue while providing the majority of Americans (and people on this app) with more after-tax income and the freedom to choose how to use it (spend, save, invest, etc.).

Has anyone had any experience with debt collectors? I was sent a letter from a company called convergent claiming they are acting on behalf of a creditor (a bank) that I’ve no interaction with. They are saying they’ll accept 50% of the amount due but there’s no mention of what the debt is. I’m assuming this is a scam but wanted to check with fish here. I have no idea how the letter got sent to me as the address is used only for my Amex cards as I don’t live in the US anymore

Been in a major rut since the beginning of the year when an org change brought on poor management that has failed me. I’ve tried to push through but mentally nothing is bringing me back up to where I was pre-org change. I’ve taken PTO to relax and I workout to get my mind off work but it doesn’t seem to help. I’ve been on the job hunt since Jan. (without much luck) because that feels like the only solution. Am I wrong to leave after just a year or do you have tips to get back mentally? TIA

COVID has made me realize I have no idea what I want to do with my life. My job has been increasingly frustrating, and the salary freezes/loss of benefits has made me resent what I’m doing even more. As a junior I’m not making crazy money and could probably pick up a nannying gig and make the same. Is it crazy for me to take some time to figure out my real goals and do something that doesn’t make me so miserable in the meantime?
