I have a screener for an in house counsel role. It’s literally 15-20 mins. What do you think will be asked?

They'll walk through your experience (make sure you hit key points from the job description), tell you a little about the job/company, and hopefully the salary range and hiring process.

Thanks! 😃

They may ask your salary expectations. Just turn it around and ask what the budget is for the role.

Thanks!

Is it with a recruiter or the hiring manager? Depending on the company, the initial recruiter call may be evaluative or it may just be informational for you. Have your usual spiels ready - what your practice is, why this job, why this company, etc. If it’s with the hiring manager, it may be more substantive.

Thank you! It is with the VP of legal recruiting.

Nope. I am working directly with the company. I am not using a recruiter.

Deloitte 🐠 and/or recruiters. I received a verbal offer of 100k, 5k sign on today and I’m really disappointed because my current comp for the same role is 103.5k. I’ve already tried to push back and the recruiter told me they cannot offer more. I was really excited about this opportunity but idk if I can take a base pay cut on top of losing out ~8k on stock awards and 401k matching. Any advice? Should I try to negotiate again or decline offer?

Has anyone had to provide references upon receiving a verbal offer (but no written offer)? Company has asked me for references, but I’m not sure how to proceed given that no one at my firm knows I’m leaving yet, my close managers / leadership that I work with are all still at the firm and I don’t want to ask them until I’m sure everything has been signed and confirmed.

Should I ask peers of similar levels?

This is my first job out of undergrad too so I don’t have former employers to ask.

Just had a series of interviews started in September and finally ended in November last week only to be told that suddenly I'm not a great fit for the job. Recruiter had called sometime in October and told me that I was a top candidate for the job and though they couldn't tell me to stop considering taking interviews with other companies they felt I was an almost lock for the job. Lesson learnt stay Strictly transactional until you sign the final contract👌

Additional Posts in In-House Counsel

Has anyone recently made the switch to in house and now feel unorganized and less productive than when billing hours? For what it is worth, I’ve received good reviews and my superiors seems to be pleased with my work. Litigation was just so task based because of needing to hit billables, so without that requirement I feel a little like a fish out of water.

I’m a 7-8ish years out director of legal at a small media company. I’ve been here about 3 years and want out, but I’m not sure whether it’s the right time considering that I don’t want to go to a giant company with tons of lawyers (I get emails from Netflix, roku, Viacom recruiters frequently). My goal job is to be the first legal hire at a media startup and eventually build out my own team. Am I too early for that?

Interviewing for L&E in house position for lateral move. Posting also says I would be advising on IP and M&A. I have experience in the 10 other or so areas they want that are all employment related. I don’t know if they’re holding out for a unicorn candidate, or I am missing something. I don’t know any L&E attys who have IP or M&A experience. Is there an employment law component to these practice areas? And do I just say I have zero experience? The position is a solid fit for me otherwise.

I’m considering an in-house role in franchise law and I’m concerned about long-term growth. Is this an area in which I’ll end up pigeonholing myself and limiting future options?

Is going in-house second year a mistake? Have a good offer, base pay is same as 2022 milbank/cravath, bonus will probably shake out higher, maybe ~300 all in with great benefits. Is it worth maybe walking away from big law and better options down the road?
