Here is what I expect from my skip level calls.
1. be transparent but with areas where you see what you can help. Don’t just come with complaints.
2. Upward feedback should not be a complain session. It should be constructive.
3. This is your time to do a humble brag. Talk about what you have been doing.
4. People aren’t mind readers. Talk about what you want to do next.
5. Always have an ask. Give them an action item.
Number 5 for me was always an Indicator of how well the person came prepared for the discussion.
Edit: the best one I ever had was with one person who came with a board. Walking through the above. It was great to have a visual and an opportunity to see how well thought out the discussion was.
OP: I’d come in then with what would a biz review. How have things been working and progress that has been made etc.
I try to round out my skip level with things that have been working well and things that have not, plus just a general overview of my team, what we've been working on, other teams we've been partnering with, successes, failures etc. My CTO is very into management and the psychology behind it, so I often use that time to pick his brain about ways I can grow my management skill set in order for my own personal growth and my teams' growth.
My first ever meeting I definitely got advice from those that had had successful meetings with him before and tailored my first conversation based on that advice. From there I was able to feel out which parts of the conversation he seemed most interested in, and now I try to focus almost exclusively on those.
