I have a sincere question and didn’t know where to ask it....as the mom of a mixed race child, I am wondering if older mixed race folks have felt similar/different prejudices or biases against them in comparison to non-mixed race POC...

We humans have an obsession with making others feel like they're not (blank) enough. Not black, not white, not feminine, not masculine, not smart, not good-looking, the list goes on. Teach your children and have them affirm daily "I am enough" and don't let anyone tell them otherwise.

True, but there is no way to prevent them from being profiled. However, I am asserting that emphasizing self worth and acknowledging biases and discrimination aren't due to things they have control over will hopefully help them navigate these situations gracefully and in a away that protects their physical, mental and spiritual space.

Absolutely. I am half black and half Asian. I’m either not black enough, not Asian enough, or allegedly unable to understand either culture because I’m mixed race. It used to really bother me when people would make off hand comments to me about being mixed race, but I’ve gotten over it. I like me. End of story.

SC1: that’s awesome and I am happy you had that experience, truly. I hardly knew any mixed race people when I was growing up. 😔

I’m 50/50 mixed, but ended up primarily European with slight Asian features. I grew up in NA. Because of this, I was privileged enough to not experience any prejudices or biased against me. I’d probably even go as far and say it has benefited me. I never feel excluded (except maybe certain Asian social circles. Like we hang out but I’m definitely not part of the core group). Being part of two cultures means twice as many people that I can relate to.

I feel the opposite but perhaps you are a glass half full kind of person. I’m also half Asian, half European but I look totally Asian to the untrained eye. I used to get teased a lot when I was younger and kids were more racist. Now that I’m older I find Asians gravitate towards me because of my looks but the relationships tend to be superficial. I’ve always found it a little harder to fit into any group, I’m too liberal for Asians and too Asian for other social circles. I don’t feel like I fully belong to any group but I always thought most mixed people felt the same. Interesting to hear another perspective!

I’m a hapa, and I think it’s been a huge net positive in my life. I’m comfortable in Asian settings and white ones, and I have strong elements of both in my interests and values (ex: I LOVE shooting sports and driving, and I also graduated from an HYP in engineering and devour chicken feet). I’ve found that leaning into both identities and being confident is key. I’m incidentally dating a Hispanic woman myself — I love the mixed race life. Ironically — and this will be surprising to some but needs to be seed — I have never felt discriminated against in my home, the Deep South, for being Asian. I have always been treated as an equal or respected. On the other hand, people in New England often assumed I was less intelligent or capable because I was from Georgia. I even had one person tell me, “Wow, your English is actually really good for a Southerner.” Imagine if someone had said that because I was Asian — it was infuriating.

It is interesting, my husband is Hapa and my sister ended up with a mixed race guy who is part asian, part middle eastern. I feel like my husband identifies strongly and specifically as Hapa in a very positive way as well however he did grow up in a major west coast city with many other Asians and Hapas. My nieces and nephews have a very unique look and are still young but I wonder what their experience will be like (my family is white) as they have such a mixed background and are growing up in the south - I’m glad to hear you had a good experience in the south. I think about them a lot and how we can all support them in their journey. I think my own kids will probably look very white, and we will be living in a major diverse west coast metro so less concerns about cultural isolation.

Yeah I could go on about this for days. I’m half black half Indian, and what it has amounted to is that I just don’t belong anywhere. I’ll echo what another poster said about having more people to relate to, but it’s like… I’m relatable everywhere so I really belong nowhere. And figuring out who I was took more work than it did for other people as far as I could tell because there was t just a box to check or set of assumptions I could make. It has really benefited me in a lot of ways and is one of the greatest gifts in my life. But it does come with its challenges

Thank you all for your thoughtful responses and perspectives. It’s extremely helpful to understand different experiences since I can’t totally relate.
