I have a student who did nothing the whole term, but passed the final exam with a 79. Should I pass him?

You need to think about that student. Some students, there are a few, they don’t need to do work and they just do well on tests. If they know the information and they know the information. are you grading on the work done, turned in, or whether they know the material?

likesmarthelpfuluplifting

Reading this, a thought came to mind, that it is important to know the material, but also to a lesser extent, it's important that a student is willing to do work assigned, like when they get a job. So a small portion of the grade can be related to work done. Thus they can never get an A if they were uncooperative to not do work assigned, but could potentially get a B for knowledge grasp?

likesmart

Some classes in college gave the option to take the final exam before classes began and, if passed, would enable the student to receive credit for the class without attending.
Pass the kid. Congratulate him for passing the exam 💕

Might as well...this school year was a big joke! LOL

likesmartfunny

If that student genuinely passed the test no cheating, then they have the knowledge whether they studied the teacher's lesson or they just know it. Are you grading them on the work they did or whether they know the subject?

like

What are you grading? Compliance or knowledge? If he fails isn’t it ultimately a behavior grade? Also, what’s a 79% a C?

like

Absolutely!

likefunny

The student was able to pass the final, so that means they learned something. But I think we don’t know the whole story. Depending on the subject and whether the other assignments that were not done, things that build knowledge to pass the test? Were they completely unrelated? Do you think they cheated? What is the “thing” that makes you feel like they didn’t earn a passing grade? Also what were the objectives and requirements for passing the class? In the end, with just the information you gave it sounds like they passed and you can enjoy your summer!

THANK YOU

I proudly teach elementary special education and have the same returning students. I get to have my students for up to 5 years if they start with me at TK. Students with exceptionalities (not disabilities), have the capacity to learn and absorb content without producing work. Non-sped students have those abilities as well. I've been completely astonished to see so many of my students making leaps of progress amidst distance learning for almost a year now. Non-readers and emerging readers are reading now. 👏🏼 They're engaged and anxious to participate. Like many of you, I've been exposed to the home life of my students during 'unmute' time. Tragic 😔 If some parents cannot give their child a space and environment to learn in, how can I expect them to even do my assignments? I rely on the relationship I have with my students to get them to do what I know they can do. Pass him because he passed the final and has absorbed your content. He's shown knowledge. Some students aren't even learning anything at home; he has. Unfortunately, not all of our students have the support or environment that exists in the 4 walls of a teacher's classroom to produce work. As educators, it is imperative that we do not forget that.

Relationship with students is absolutely the key to their success! I love the fact that I have my students for multiple years and yes all of my students I consider my children. In my experience most students long for the teacher that thinks of them as more than just another student. They long for the teacher that sees they are more than they appear to be. All students need us (teachers) to believe in his or her abilities to become someone extraordinary! Every student has the potential to exceed greatness and make awesome contributions to our world! We just have to believe in them so that they can begin to believe too!

like

In my opinion, our job is to make sure our students receive an education and can be a productive person in society. If they passed the test then they learned the content. If they didn’t do the work, they didn’t need to prove they knew the work to themselves. When that student gets out into the real world and has demands on them and doesn’t follow through they will learn the hard way, but they will learn. I would give them the passing grade.

We were told that NO student is to fail during COVID-19. I had 4 students with grades varying from 18-32, they all passed with a 60. I was forced to “give” them a passing grade.

likeupliftingfunny

I was asked to pass a student with 8% because at 14, she was pregnant, covid and everyone felt sorry for her. She didn’t do but 8% of her work. I did not pass her. How could I ? Others worked their butts off and did pass.

I understand your frustration! My administration is backing us up! During the semester, I called home and I bent over backwards to help my virtual students. I am failing a student with. 68 average. I was worried I would get some flack. I went to an administrator prepared. I advised number of missing assignments and late assignments. She told me to stop worrying. That kid earned that 68.

likeupliftinghelpful

There are 18 weeks in a semester. If you give 1 assignment a day, that's 90. Even if they have a day off, 4 days a week would be 72. Are you suggesting that students should only be held accountable for 2-3 assignments per week?

likeuplifting

Yes! Please. It’s a pandemic! Everyone should pass period.

like

Yes. Student showed mastery.

I conducted pre-tests to my level 1 foreign language students in an all remote learning format this semester. I told my students that the pre-test was for no grade. The average score was 75%! In a pre-test?! With that average I might as well just start teaching them level 2 content!
I have conducted the same pre-test in my in-person classes for the last 10 years and the average was never above 15%. To those here who recommend "not to asumme anything" I would say it would be VERY naive not to! To those who say that this student "acquired the knowledge to pass the class", I would say "No s/he didn't!".
Students are cheating shamelessly in this virtual online environment! My recommendation to my colleague here: don't give students a multiple choice test or exam that they can Google the answers for. Create skill-knowledge-evidence-project based assessments with rubrics that delineate clear expectations where the students have to show work, effort, creativity, and above all demonstrate the set of skills that you expect to see achieved in your test/exam. Make your students work for it! Make them realize that Googling their way up to graduation is useless and that US teachers are much smarter than that!

like

Well said. The kid may well have googled their test answers for 10 minutes and went back to his x-box for the rest of the night. COVID teaching has been a struggle for all of us, but are still supposed to be teaching, even if it is life skills (aka working) above content.

like

Did the student demonstrate that they mastered the learning objectives? If so then yes you should pass them. The grade should reflect their level of understanding content material.

like

If your test is truly designed to prove mastery of the curriculum then you absolutely should. Assignments are designed as practice to assist in mastering the curriculum. If you think your final isn’t a great measure of mastery then that’s a different story.

like

Best answer yet!

So students are like that you think she or he not learning but they are this is your doing so I would pass him You a great teacher because this student was able to learn when you thought he or she wasn’t

I’m sure what you wrote is very important and I’d love the opportunity to understand but what you wrote is incoherent, I’m sorry. Can you add punctuation to help advance your thoughts?

I didn’t fail any students for the final quarter, regardless of work done. It was a hard choice for some students, but ultimately I decided that I didn’t know what their home lives were like, what they were dealing with at home, or what.

How many of you are doing back up care/day care/ child care vs managing children at home? What's your thoughts around this, pros and cons?

Do you think using “him/her” for “he/she” (ex: “her is playing” “him not here yet”) is something that kids usually grow out of? Or does it need direct intervention? I have 2 students who exhibit this error, who otherwise should be dismissed. Normally I’d just keep them on and work on it alongside other goals, but they don’t have any other goals, and with COVID, and my upcoming maternity leave in March, a more compact caseload would be advantageous.
