I have a student who only comes to school two days a week and then only for 1 hour. He tells me I have to pass him so it doesn't matter. This is very frustrating. I knew this student hates school and often states he is stupid. I just do my best to encourage him. Build confidence. Any ideas to encourage him more? By the way, taking to his parent does nothing.

DO YOU have to pass him?? In our state, the students fail if they don’t do the work 🤷‍♀️ I work with high school students at an alternative school, and I sadly have many kids in the same boat. Over half of my students are failing all of their classes because they’re simply not doing any work 😐

Start giving him the zeros he earned.

Lack of motivation and no self-confidence are very hard to combat. You are right to keep it positive.

I would ask him what his interests are and what he dreams of doing to make a living when he eventually graduates. Then challenge him to work backwards to see what he needs to achieve his dream. And tell him while you are NOT obligated to pass him, your real concern is that you see a smart young man who is short-changing himself and you want to see him honor his own worth like you do. Then give him credit for any research he does, etc.

like

This is unfortunate! Are you able to build on his strengths? Is there anybody in your class you can partner him with? Sadly, the students have to be motivated more in the virtual platform. Is there any celebrity he looks up too? Perhaps share with him some famous people who hated school and now they’re successful!

I would ask my principal to step in.

Why is it so hard to join a group ? My boyfriend has his group of friends (both males and females) but every time we hang out with them, I feel left out because I don’t have history with them and they all have their inside jokes and stories. He said I need to try more to interact with them but honestly I feel like certain friends mostly his female bestie is trying to not include me. I’ve tried to become friends with her but she’s not putting in effort to get to know me … I need advice.

How many married professionals with young families are just sticking it out “for the kids”? Marriage is very dead and has been for a while. Young kids 4 and 1. My wife and I don’t fight, but share 0 interests outside of the kids and can’t stand to be around each other. I’m so ready to leave… I just can’t bear the thought of doing it to my children even though another part of me feels like wife and I would both be better parents if our lives were separate. Anyone else done a similar analysis?

The person I’m seeing has been responding to my texts days later (only a recent development) and it’s making me anxious. They have been busy the past two weeks with PhD exams and their last message was them planning when they could see me again (in a really flirty way too), so logically I know the delay is not a sign of disinterest. But I have an anxious attachment style (if that’s not obvious) and my therapist is on leave right now, so I’m struggling. Do any of you have any advice?

I’m currently a third year in my small firm’s life sciences team. I’m not really stimulated by the work and although they say they have a lot of work, they’re not good at managing workload. I haven’t had much work on my plate even after asking many times for more than six months. I’m ready to move to a larger law firm. However, I am concerned how I’ll manage the workload as a mom to a toddler. The good thing about my firm is that they’re flexible with hours. Anyone have experience balancing?

My fiancé moved abroad for med school. Long distance is hard but I love my job, the work, the people, and the culture. I wish there were roles where you could work abroad. I wish I could work here forever, but I’ll likely need to switch to a firm that allows working abroad at some point to save the marriage. I’m afraid to tell anyone because I want to maximize my time/contribution here. Thoughts? Advice? Does anyone know of good firms that allow abroad work?

In my 1 year in corporate this is what I have understood.
1. Choose your friends wisely.
2. Focus on skill development.
3. Gossip and office politics are more or less common thing in corporate. We may not avoid it but limit ourselves as much as possible.
4. expect unexpected things.
5. No one really cares for you, so you have to set
your own priority and take decision accordingly.
6. You will understand whether your colleague is actually your friend or not only when you will be on np 😀.

This fight has gotten real! I’ve been offered a job, advertised as remote, but they want to have a blended program with teachers on campus. There’s nothing like waking up to a call on August 1 from my district coordinator telling me that they want to move me from my middle school resource room SpEd position (which I love) to K-5 Setting 3 SpEd position. I told her all the reasons that won’t work for me and even gave her another idea that would require a non-licensed teacher to be moved so I could take her place at the hs. So, I’ll be spending my Monday applying for a new job in another district. How’s your Monday going so far? 😭😔
