I have a very good job offer to do what my career passion is. I start in 2 weeks, but my current job just created a position for me to do the same thing so that I don’t leave. Is there any good way to tell the future job that I rescind my offer so close to the start date?

First and foremost congratulations! It sounds like you already made up your mind, a formalized thank you should be more than enough (they just give us an automated no thank you and keep it pushing). However, if you still have doubts and see major pros and cons between staying and leaving, see if your current company will negotiate even more money or perks for you if you’ve already finalized the other offer. Can’t hurt to sweeten the deal!

No real way to not burn that bridge, so make sure you're getting something GREAT out of your current company. Personally I'd caution against sticking around at any one place too long (or even taking a promotion internally) cause you usually can get better compensation by going elsewhere. But I'll admit I have no real idea how true that is for people not in the creative track.

I’m with you. I’d leave. Go do that job at a new company for a higher salary and a fresh start. Why were you looking to leave? Keep that in mind.

Something to also consider is if you’ll get a clean slate to explore this new role without the likelihood of getting swept back into the responsibilities of your old job or it becoming a hybrid duty tacked on top of your current role. Would it be an entirely new team/dept, new account/projects, new ways of working?

I’d say give it a shot. At best, it’s a great fit and you learn and grow into something you’re more passionate about. At worst, you *may* burn a bridge with the other company but will have hopefully gained some experience to eventually move on if it doesn’t work out. Either way it sounds like either decision will benefit you in some way.

I would say you’d be surprised how quickly your dissatisfaction will return. There is a study about how many ppl stay in response to a counter and the fact that most end up leaving in three months or so after again.

So I guess for some background in my reason to leave wasn’t because of the company. I actually love the company, but wanted to get into a different field. My company had the field i was looking for, but no open positions, then the new company came along. My job found an open position that wasn’t posted which is why I’m open to staying

So @op what did you decide to do? Did you stay or did you go..

Is your current company making a counteroffer or did this develop without them knowing you were leaving? Counteroffers are flattering, but look at your circumstances objectively. Where’s the real opportunity? The new company is offering you the opportunity you want. Is the current company doing this because you forced them? It’s great if they really want to keep you. If there is a need for layoffs, you could be remembered as the person who wanted to leave anyway. It happens sometimes when they need to rationalize decisions. So don’t make safety and familiarity your only reason for staying.

Thank you for posting this and for all the great responses. I am in a very similar situation and was feeling really off when the counter offer was made. I felt confused but again the responses are so helpful. “Remember why you’re leaving.”

How’s this all turn out??!! Hope it was for the best 💜

need advice. I have been working in an interim role as a portfolio manager. I was promised that the role would be mine. However, after doing the job for 2 months, I have been advised that we might not get the funding for the role and I might not get the raise and the title but my responsibilities will be the same. Its a political minefield. How should I back out elegantly that I need to be compensated fairly and competitively from this mess without burning any bridges

Hi everyone! I recently accepted a new job with a Big 4 and am also newly engaged. I have a couple of concerns… the main one being that I may not have enough time off for 2022 to cover taking off for the wedding, honeymoon, and then a couple of other weddings where I’m supposed to be a bridesmaid. Do you think there would be any wiggle room with managers allowing time off, or is it generally pretty strict? (Continued in comments)
