I have about 10k to invest. Is my below understanding correct?
>If I put in SPY, etc, I'll end up maybe doubling or tripling my money after 5-10 years. If i identify individual stocks, I can make 10x

You can lose 10x also by picking the wrong stocks. You’re not a Wall Street trader, so don’t try to be one. Index funds all the way.

Agreed. I personally “combat” my limited research by satisfying my savings objectives with low ETF mix, and only after that, venturing out into stock picking territory (like you describe). As with most things, there’s a little mix of column A and B that people will find themselves in. Just hope no one ever goes full-on WallStreetBets. Being knowledgeable and disciplined is the pre-req to making things more complicated

smart

If you can identify the right ones and time it right, why aren’t you buying options. The return could be in the 100x.

You seem to be very new to investing so:
1) It is entirely possible that you COULD pick the right stock and 10x your returns. In the same way you COULD pick the right horse in a race
2) The generally accepted advice is to spread your bets across a large number of companies representative of the broader economy - this is most easily conducted (for a number of reasons that you could look up) by investing in low cost ETFs (Exchange Traded Funds)
3) You are not an investment professional, and even they do not get their investments right all the time. When you’re playing with your own money it’s best to avoid the risk of going to $0

Is SPY better than VOO or VTI?

like

...(continued) 10x even if I identify the right ones. Is that correct?

Doesn’t have to be one or the other. For instance, you could put 7.5k-8k into SPY, and then the rest into a few stocks. It all depends on your investor goals and personality and risk tolerance.

Oh bud.. I’ve lost my shit with individual stocks. It’s not worth it from a risk reward perspective, unless you do it full time, like Warren Buffett. Stick to buying S&P or other total stock market index fund to cost average down. If you have $10k, I would put $1000 per mo in the market starting now; so even if it goes down, you average down with your money. no one can time the market so this is the best strategy

Probably won’t be a bad idea... however, with the stimulus this short term rally might continue. Plus options are expensive right now (because of volatility); you might have to sell calls

I'm really confused on how the employer sponsored 401k impacts taxes.

I'm filing my taxes and credit karma says I owe $2000. I only contributed $8500 to my 401k in 2020 and want to see what would happen if I increased my contribution in 2021. I'm playing around with different scenarios and if I increase my 401k contribution to $19,500, credit karma still shows that I owe $2,000. I thought it should go down as my taxable income is lowered.

Am I missing something?

So let's say spy drops another 15-20% but anyway it will come back to those levels may be in a year or so. Why everyone is so anxious about drops. Granted valuations are outrageous and unsustainable but 5 trillion free money won't go back to feds like that. Also retail participation had gone so even retail is small they will try to buy dip wherever possible. Given all this background why do anyone have to worry about drops.
