I have about $50k in cash in a HYSA, a $40k irs bill, about $300k in student loans (paying the monthly minimum and chunks here and there). I have only about $10k invested in stocks/roth IRA. Should I: 1) lump some pay off the tax bill or 2) pay half the tax bill, then pay the rest of the bill in installments and invest the other half of the cash?

Is the IRS bill subject to high finance fees? If yes, pay that as best you can before worrying too much about investing.

If no, the hybrid approach is not terrible as “time in market is more important than timing the market.” Or so the financial wizards often suggest.

But yeah…my first instinct would be to tackle any high interest debt as quickly as possible.

Pay the IRS. Their interest rates are probably very close to what you’re earning in a HYSA plus they charge additional penalties.

I heard someone make a bold statement that contributing to a traditional 401k versus a Roth 401k were the exact same assuming the same tax rate. I ran the numbers and to my surprise they were not wrong (even considering the earnings). Can anyone explain why a Roth would ever make sense given that income will likely be lower and therefore lower tax rate in retirement?

24, a decent amount of savings in the bank. I’m sort of interested in buying a property in the next few years.
Is this a good or bad idea? I live in Ny area, so obviously the city would probably be too expensive to buy any property. Would probably have to buy further out in westchester, Long Island, maybe connecticut or NJ. If I buy, should I be living there? Or should I rent it out until I’m ready to live there (assuming it’s a bit further from the city). Very early stages of just thinking
