I think it’s great to hire people from various backgrounds. They may have the transferable skills that employers need. Yes, take a lot of notes and ask questions. It’s important to have colleagues who will help you understand the foundation, process, concepts, and be engaged...good luck!

Expectations should be lots of hours. Find people that will mentor and support you.

👍👍 well said

As a fresh staff the expectation is you will know very little but will bring a good attitude and desire to learn

What was the book you recommended?

Is this for a Fed Tax role, or something else?

This should be rather obvious, but try to prepare your own return, if you have never done that. I don't mean just do the data entry in TurboTax. Look at an actual Form 1040, read the instructions that apply, and type in the info that applies to you. [Extra credit if you create an Excel file to do some of the math for you. Then see how much your refund would change if you donated $300 or $3,000 to charity. Or if you received a nice bonus with 22% tax withheld. Or sold some bitcoin, pretending you bought some when you first heard of it.] You can go back and use TurboTax to actually file if you want, but at least understand the very basics.

I am continually stunned by tax staff who aren't comfortable doing their own W-2 only tax return, and have their parents do it. If you are that uncomfortable with the most basic of taxes, it makes me uneasy when we try to bill your hourly rate to clients for your work.

I’m up for a promotion at work and I have no idea how much to ask for since it’s not a standard position. Currently I’m a team lead and manage about 8 technicians, my promotion will be to a regional service delivery manager, and I will be managing over 30 in 3 locations. I went from a tier 1 engineer in managed servers to team lead with about a 10k increase in salary.I’m thinking about a 15k increase this time from 65k to 80k. Anybody in managed services have a similar position to compare

Hi all, I have just been made redundant and I’m actively looking for work within the recruitment space. I’m looking for an embedding in-house / in-house remote role. Should I refer my SO to Google?

Her role is 30% technical, 70% business (meaning she has good problem solving and stakeholder mgmt skills).
5 YOE+Degree at a top engineering school in Europe
My experience at Google made her interested in joining the company, but we never really acted on it.
Could she be a good fit?
If so which areas/orgs?

(Also, are there any rules against it?)

Are you paying for bridesmaid hair and make-up? Was a little sticker shocked $200 per person before gratuity, just adds up quickly with that many people😬 Not requiring it but wanted to offer it if they want to be more glammed up, but now seeing online that’s it’s considered quite rude to not cover it for them? Maybe just cover one and they can do the other if they want? Don’t want to be rude if it’s expected but also don’t want to blow our budget… any perspective on the “norm” appreciated!
