Don’t let the haters dissuade you too much. I started my career in big 4 and worked there for many years before leaving. I learned a lot and had a great experience. It’s a different set of skills I think than what you probably get in FAANG but if you’re looking to make a change, you can probably use your expertise to pivot into a good big4 role

I went from Deloitte to industry and am now actually interviewing at Amazon, so we’ll see. When I left Deloitte I got a small but modest bump. Would expect a significant bump if I switch to Amazon

It depends (<— classic consulting answer). If you want to travel, work for multiple clients, and get to explore different industries, there is no better field than consulting. Just beware the hours/pay/corporate perks may not be as good. I personally love working in B4 consulting and they all have good tech strat practices. Also worth looking at MBB if you want slightly higher pay scale but rough hours. Like people have said here, a lot of people who start in consulting hope to end up in FAANG/other industry jobs, but I also know a lot of people who have left impressive industry roles to do consulting. It may be a little bit of “grass is always greener” syndrome but all of our careers also wind in different directions. Choose your own path and the experiences that will make you happy. And no, it’s not unheard of to go from tech to consulting. Lmk if you find yourself applying to Deloitte and best of luck :)

It seems like 9/10 consultants would give their first born for a faang exit. Make of that what you will…

You are stunning and brave 🥰

And here I am trying to move into faang! If you want consulting maybe aim for strategic consulting firms like McKinsey, Bain, BCG rather than Big 4. You might regret moving to big 4….the pay doesn’t justify the hours.

Each person’s career path is different, and sometimes it takes a few twists and turns to finally find the right path. Personally, Big 4 was a stepping stone, grateful for the experience and it helped me get to where I am now, but would never go back though.

I think lots of people would be willing to “job trade” you to get to work for Apple!

I worked for Accenture, PwC, and BDO and then worked for a startup. Almost worked at Deloitte two different times as well. All within ten years out of college. Pay was great. Projects were usually horrible. Management all miserable and unhappy. A lot of the work was sort of staff augmentation. Lots of “don’t reinvent the wheel” stuff, I felt like a robot. Even worked in a basement office with no windows with about 15 other consultants. Most of the consultants get that way. First project out of college was to streamline billing subsystems to support the firing of 60,000 FTEs to rid manual touch points. Next was sap implementation which we were always behind schedule and working around the clock, even over night. Next Sarbanes Oxley - pre-audit (audit is the most boring activity ever), PMO - worked 2 hour days to set up a project report for client executives (management was unhappy and extremely rude), then business process improvement (interview and document jobs and make them better - but the staff you interview thinks you will have them fired). I also did a contract rollover - that was fun. I wouldn’t leave Apple. Now I own my own financial practice and instead of billing to make my partner rich I feel like I’m making a difference in my clients life/future and most of the money goes in my pocket, not a partners. Completely flexible arrangement now.

Lol- umm this is the wrong direction. ALL consultants dream of a FAANG role.

What does your retirement budget look like? Assuming no debt. What is your expected basic minimum expenditures (core life)? And what are you budgeting for fun and luxury? My basic is around 10k a month for taxes and food and transport and utilities. Luxury and fun is another ten. Big expense in basic is property tax. Big expenditure in fun is travel. I think my basic budget is too high and I could bring it down and be very happy in a smaller home and less restaurants.

I’m realizing I have a lot of fear—mostly related to health stuff and death. Feel like people are getting sick left right and center (not talking about covid). How would you communicate the involuntary termination of a team member at a startup? Typically, I handle these communications by having the manager have an informative session immediately after the termination to the employee's direct team and the news rapidly spread. However, as this is such a small team it may cause confusion and concerns for the team that stays. I feel like there isn't an "ideal" way to communicate involuntary terminations, but happy to hear your advice

BCG or MBB folks, got a call from the recruiter today that the outcome of decision round and calibration call today was positive and the lead partner will give me a call on Monday to discuss with me on the role and offer directly by himself. I recently started at a larger software company as an AE. As I’m getting more into the process, I’m finding things odd. Like, cold calls and emails are metrics I’m judged on more than closed won business. I know that’s part of the job but it seems strange I’m judged on it so heavily. And, I seem to be the first real outside AE hire as everyone else seems to have been promoted up from SDR roles, including all of my direct management. I’m questioning if I made the right move. Stick it out or look?
