I have an 08 Toyota with a decent scratch on the side. According to Kelly Blue Book it’s worth about 10k. Estimates to fix the scratch are about 1k. Is it worth fixing or should I just let it be until I buy a new car? I’ll probably buy one mid to late next year. I just can’t fathom spending nearly 10% of the cars value on an aesthetic issue but I also don’t want to be cheap/dumb. No technical issues with the car or anything!

If you spend 1k will the value of the car be 11k?

It might be worth finding a good detailer to see if it can be buffed out.

$1k to repair sounds like the quote from a paint shop to sand it down, spray it, and feather it into the panel. If the scratch isn’t too deep, a good detailer might be able to remove or substantially remove the obviousness of it for $200 or less.

It may not increase the value to remove the scratch, but it should sell faster if the car looks better overall!

Glad it worked out!! A skilled detailer can work wonders!

Additional context: This was my first car and I decided not to buy a new one until I paid off my student loans which I did fall of last year (4 years post undergrad). I want a bit more of a savings cushion before buying a new car and don’t want a car payment after finally paying off my loans and being debt free unless it’s ridiculously cheap interest

It will not be worth 10k next week. Sell it ASAP

Where are you from? I am looking to buy a car.
