Congrats on your opportunity - sounds like an ‘entrepreneurial’ type feel! I’d say that your career in strategy will be hinged upon industry experience and subject matter expertise - which depending on the breadth of this opportunity can provide you with exposure to HR, Org Transformation, Tech Implementation, and even SWOT analysis opps. All this to say, “strategy” is such a broadly defined field and can encompass so much. I would therefore implore you to think of this opportunity not from the pure tech field, but more from the translatable skills that you can craft into a future ‘strategy’ position. I don’t think you have to worry about being pigeon holed necessarily since many strategy consultants come from a very technical or industry-specific background before generalizing their craft.
Good luck! 👍🏾
Might boil how you’re defining success and a part of that is whether you want to get into strat ->PE fast or if you’re willing to take the whole “career is a journey” approach. If you decide to build a dept there’s prob so many transferable skills that apply to strat/PE (eg finding customers for the dept, commercializing a new dept/offering, etc.). I guess you just have to see the silver lining.
On the flip side, if you 100p know you wanna bounce to strategy asap, you should feel empowered to be hyper focused on getting there and cut out the non-essential opportunities out. People are going to “sell” you opportunities during your journey to a goal, so it’s important to define what success is for you
Congrats and gl!
