Any in-house counsel in here willing to post their company, level or YOE, and total comp breakdown? If you’re comfortable, please consider posting both your current stats and what your stats were when you first moved in-house. If there’s any other information that you want to share, please include that too (e.g., hours, interesting perks, etc.). Info on in-house salaries is pretty hard to come by, and it would be great to compile some data points here! Facebook Amazon Google Netflix Apple

An easy but boing job will be nice with a newborn

When you delve into benefits the new firm offers and any probationary period, check and see if you are actually eligible for maternity leave in full or in part, etc. I started a new job shortly before my son was born and turns out I wasn’t entitled to any paternity leave (not the same as maternity). The people I worked with were cool about me taking some time off and it didn’t really matter but for mothers, it’s a totally different ballgame, that recovery is no joke as I’ve observed but never experienced for distinct biological reasons. But I do know women who started a job pregnant and were told they weren’t yet eligible for paid leave. I thought how could this be legal but apparently it happens.

Do it now don’t disclose upfront and take the leave you’re entitled to. You’ll be happy when your kid is born to have the pay and better hours
Try to negotiate maternity leave (maybe even unpaid would be worth it depending on the pay raise, but ask for paid) into the terms of your new position. If they won’t do that, I’m not sure I’d give up guaranteed leave unless the pay is significantly more.
For Fmla and many company leave policies you have to be employed a year before eligible
How big is the pay disparity? Can you get a copy of new firm’s handbook now and check their leave policies? If the pay disparity is not huge or you won’t get full leave, I’d probably stay through maternity and the hard transition that comes after if the main issue is that it is boring and you aren’t mistreated or grossly undercompensated. This is, of course, without knowing you, the situation of your partner (if one is in the picture), or much of anything about your job or prospective job.
Also check at current place of employment if they will require you to pay back maternity leave if you leave them within a certain amount of time… that can play into your calculations as well.
Good point! Will do
My hours now are similar to the new job.
Pay difference is only 30k now but it’s more about my earning potential there. Those are all good points. I have a very easy and great work situation now. Everyone is nice and understanding. My husband works too and is definitely in the picture :)
