I have an eating disorder and find it hard hiding it in an open office where every1 sees wat u eat/don't eat. I can only turn down dinner invites so many times. Pp r def judging me. Advice?

Maybe it’s time to be honest and upfront. Maybe say I’m struggling with a few things and it’s affecting my appetite. How freeing would that be? You might be surprised at how sympathetic people can be. Plus, it might open a dialogue for people to share what they’re fighting. I have generalized anxiety disorder. Everyone has something.

@OP ugh, it’s actually very embarrassing. I started dating my first boyfriend, who threatened to break up with me if I didn’t quit. I think his words were “it’s gross to think about you throwing up every time we make out.” My eating disorder was much more about codependency and getting people to notice me than it was about body dysmorphia, so I wasn’t keeping it a secret. When I “got what I wanted” (a guy who I thought was great but wound up being a jerk) it was relatively easy to stop. That relationship lasted three years, and when we broke up, it occurred to me to go back to that way of being and getting guys to look at me. But as toxic as that relationship was, I kind of decided that if I was going to get one thing out of it, it would be the end of my flirtation with bulimia. That and therapy really, really helped.

I struggled with an eating disorder when I was in my teens, but I don’t think I can fully relate to how you feel. It sounds very stressful, I’m sorry you’re feeling judged. It’s possible people are concerned. I hope, like FSE asked, you’re pursuing recovery for yourself and/or going to therapy.

I tried therapy but it's been ten years and I'm losing hope. In a therapist's office, it's easy to say "I'm ready to change" - not so easy to follow thru when food is in front of u. I def have never opened up to others - not went friends, let alone co workers. I'm afraid they'll judge me / might affect performance reviews. Everyone seems so normal compared to me, so it's hard to open up if ur already concerned that they won't understand.
