If they ask, say;
"I am looking for respectable offers."
Then shut your mouth.

It is important to remember that if pushed hard, be precise in your language.
I see many candidates putting the foot in it when negotiations happen.
If you are being represented by a recruiter, let the recruiter deal with it.
A good recruiter should be protecting you from such pressure and will give you an additional bite at the cherry when negotiating.
for extra context: I have worked for an NGO/charity for the last 5+ years and have never worked in a true corporate environment so I have no real reference point for salaries. I don't want to undersell myself, but also don't want to outprice myself.
thanks for the advice, I really appreciate it. I have had a couple of calls with the team in question but we haven't touched on salary yet. I had a quick call with someone in HR who asked me what I wanted which I didn't respond to at that point. I asked what their salary range was and I was told that isn't usually how they operate which seemed a little strange to me. I will try asking someone in the direct team what their range is and see if they're a little more transparent. thanks!
Google a salary calculator like pay scale. Do NOT discuss in your first round unless they drop a number first.
Don't say anything about your comp expectations. Let them talk first. Tell them you'd like to get paid commensurate with the impact the level and scope of the role. If you need further advice, I'm always happy to help. Reach out to me on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/alanjstein/
